【E】씨엔블루 정용화 “1년 만에 컴백, 데뷔만큼 떨려” CNBLUE Jung Yonghwa "Comeback in a year, As Nervous as Debut"

월드투어를 마치고 씨엔블루가 1년여 만에 돌아왔다. 타이틀곡은 ‘Can't Stop'. 아시아 뿐 아니라 유럽, 호주, 남미 등 세계 곳곳을 돌며 쌓은 경험은 더욱 성숙한 음악적 자양분이 됐고, 앨범에도 고스란히 녹아들었다. 음악에 대한 멈출 수 없는 열정으로 자작곡으로 가득 채운 앨범을 내놓았지만, 씨엔블루 정용화는 “‘외톨이야’때 만큼 떨린다”며 긴장된 표정을 감추지 못했다.
2월 28일, KBS ２TV ‘뮤직뱅크’ 대기실에서 컴백무대를 앞둔 씨엔블루 정용화를 만났다.
▣다음은 정용화와 1문1답
▶오랜만에 국내 팬들을 만난다. 소감이 남다를 것 같다.
-투어 뒤 1년 만에 컴백하게 됐다. ‘외톨이야’때로 돌아간 느낌이다. 그만큼 떨리고 긴장도 많이 된다.
▶국내 활동 공백이 길지만 휴식은 없었다.
-한국활동이 상대적으로 적었지만 커리어를 많이 쌓고 왔다. 그럼에도 (팬들에게)죄송스러운 마음이 있다. 그래서 더 열심히 하고 싶다. 음악적으로도 전곡이 저희 자작곡이라 부담도 됐는데, 활동하면서 다양한 모습을 보여드리겠다.
▶이번 ‘can't stop’은 템포가 느리고 서정적이다. 이전의 씨엔블루와 다른 느낌을 준다.
-씨엔블루하면 떠오르는 음악적 색깔이 있었다. 그 부분에 변화를 주고 싶었고, 다양한 매력을 가진 밴드 음악이 있다는 것을 보여드리고 싶었다. 그래서인지 지금까지 앨범 중에 가장 열심히 한 것 같다.
▶특히 어떤 부분을 열심히 했나?
-곡을 작업하고, 선별하는 과정까지 신경을 많이 썼다. 전체 20곡 중에서 앨범에 수록될 6곡을 골랐다. 앨범의 색깔을 맞추려고 고민했다.
▶오랜만에 내놓은 앨범인데 어떤 평가를 받고싶나? 혹은 '이런 부분은 알아줬으면 좋겠다'는 점이 있다면?
-이전엔 앨범을 내놓으면 호불호가 있었다. '좋다' '아쉽다'가 있는데 ‘역대급 타이틀’이라는 얘길 많이 들어서 그것만으로도 뿌듯하다.
▶씨엔블루는 음악활동 뿐 아니라 연기도 활발하게 하는 밴드다. 지금 음악활동을 하고 있지만, 앞으로 연기 계획도 궁금하다.
-지금은 음악을 중점적으로 하고 있지만, 제안이 들어오는 것들이 있다. 그중 제 마음을 사로잡는 작품이 있다면 하겠다. 일단 지금은 음악 활동에 집중하고 싶다. 워낙 오랫동안 국내에서 활동하지 못한 만큼, 기다려주신 팬들을 위해서라도 더 열심히 하겠다는 마음 뿐이다.
CNBLUE returned after a year, following their world tour. The title track is "Can't Stop". The experience from not only Asia but Europe, Australia, and South America turned into rich source for music, which melted right into their album. Upon releasing an album full of compositions, full of passion for music, CNBLUE's Jung Yonghwa couldn't hide his excitement. "I'm as nervous as 'I'm a Loner' period."
I met CNBLUE's Jung Yonghwa on Feb. 28, at the waiting room of 'Music Bank' before their comeback stage.
Q&A with Jung Yonghwa
▶Your domestic return in a long time. How does it feel?
-It's a comeback after a year of tours. It feels like I returned to "I'm a Loner" period. It's that much nervous and exciting.
▶The domestic promotion had a long hiatus but you didn't have any break.
-Our Korean promotions were relatively less, but we returned having built considerable career. I still feel apologetic (to our fans). That's why I want to try harder. Musically, I had some pressure because it was all our self-compositions, but we'll show you many different sides through this promotion.
▶Your new single 'Can't Stop' has a slow tempo and is lyrical. It gives off a different vibe from previous CNBLUE.
-There was a particular musical style when you think of "CNBLUE". I wanted to change that, and wanted to show that there are diverse styles of appealing band music. Perhaps that's why, but I think I've worked the hardest for this album out of all the albums.
▶Which part did you pay special attention to?
-From working on the songs to selecting them, I paid special care. Out of 20 songs total, I selected 6 songs to be included in the album. I strove to coordinate the color of the album.
▶It's an album after a long hiatus. What kind of review do you wish to receive? Or is there a specific part you want to be recognized?
-Before, when we released albums, people would either really like it or dislike it. It was either "Good" or "It's still lacking", but I've heard so many times that it's the "all-time best title track", so I feel satisfied just for that.
▶CNBLUE doesn't just do music, but is active in dramas as well. Though you're doing music promotions now, I'm curious about your plans for acting.
-Right now, music is my main focus, but I am receiving some offers. I'll do it if there's a work that captures my heart. For now, I want to concentrate on music promotions. It's been so long since we didn't promote in Korea, I just want to work harder for the fans who have been waiting.

Waaah, chose 6 out of 20? I keep feeling greedy although I'm pretty sure that he made the decision for the songs to be included with a lot of care. And it worked, since the mini is flawless.
And yes, I've seen so many non-boice comment this is their favourite CNB title track. Makes me super happy.

Love this interview.
This album is truly a labor of love. I hope he is going to get much recognition and a lot of love, not for his being just a hot idol, but a real musician who presents GOOD music.
Promotion in Korea is really very crucial. I think most Kpoppers don't really know the band has released great albums in Japan and the sum total of J concerts is many times that of the intl concerts. It totally looks like even the K music critics have no idea either.
I hope this promotion will be a fruitful one and a happy one for him. -
What I've noticed this time round is that there are many people who fell in love with the song even though previously they did not pay much attention to CNBLUE, so I'm happy that people are starting to take note of them and have become new fans of CNBLUE. At the same time, many musicians are also giving praise to the EP and giving great reviews of ALL songs, which is again fantastic as that tells me that other musicians are looking at them and their work seriously.

Twenty tracks? He is really incredibly prolific considering they released a full length Japanese album just half a year ago. Writing that much material while juggling such a packed schedule with touring, promoting, acting etc. is impressive. Especially since the Can't Stop album is such a step up for them in terms of songwriting, considering the the rich, layered sound of the tracks and how they experimented with different styles. So it's not only prolific but also quality output... I really hope this gets all the recognition it deserves!

I always have been jealous of YH's talent but this time I am also jealous of his passion for Music. It feels like I am way too lazy to achieve my goal. He certainly motivates me in so many ways so I am proud of being his fan.
"Just music" is what he felt for the mini album, just like he said in his tweet.
