단오의 유래는 일반적인 설에 따른면 원래 여름철 질병과 돌림병을 제거하기 위한 날이었는데, 후에 초나라 시인 굴원(屈原)이 강물에 빠진 날을 기념하는 날로 인식되고 있다. 굴원(屈源)은 기원전  3세기의 초나라(楚國)때에 생활한 사람으로서 조국이  함락된 후 비분을 참지못하고 멱라강(汨羅江)에 투신자살했는데 ,이날이 바로 5월 초 닷새였다. 그 후 해마다 5월 초면 사람들은 굴원의 고결한 성품을 기리기 위해 대나무통에 쌀을 넣어 강에 던지는 것으로 제사지냈다. 대나무통에 쌀을 넣은것이 후에는  종자(粽子)로 발전되었다.

종자(粽子)를 먹는것은 단오의 가장 중요한 풍속이다. 종자는 옛날 각수<角黍>라고 했는데 갈대잎이나 참대잎 등으로 찹쌀을 싸서 실로 원추형이나 베개형으로 묶은 다음 쪄 먹는다. 단오절 전날 밤이면 집집마다 종자를 만들어 가마에 찌는것으로 명절준비를 한다. 종자는 서로 나누는 선물로도 되었는데 단오때 친척이나 친구들을 방문하면서 자기 집에서 만든 종자를 서로 나눈다. (http://visitbeijing.or.kr/detail.php?number=359)

Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) are traditionally eaten during the Duanwu Festival (Mandarin: Duānwǔ; Cantonese: Tuen Ng), which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar (approximately late-May to mid-June). 

A popular belief amongst the Chinese of eating zongzi involved commemorating the death of Qu Yuan, a famous Chinese poet from the kingdom of Chu who lived during the Warring States period. Known for his patriotism, Qu Yuan tried unsuccessfully to warn his king and countrymen against the expansionism of their Qin neighbors. When the Qin general Bai Qi took Yingdu, the Chu capital, in 278 BC, Qu Yuan's grief was so intense that he drowned himself in the Miluo river after penning the Lament for Ying.
