“I was shocked listening to Sunwoo JungA’s song, ‘Crow-tit’. I want to collaborate with her.”

When CNBLUE’s Jung Yonghwa mentioned SWJA in an interview, she thought of him simply as a “vocalist of an idol band.” That changed quite a bit when she listened to his first album. “He’s a real songwriter.” Within a year, Jung Yonghwa contacted her, that he wants to sing a duet with her. Coincidentally, SWJA had written a song for a duet. She’d been thinking it would go well with Jung’s voice, but she couldn’t bring up the courage to contact him. After such exchange of emotions, they released two songs where they accommodated one another within their own color, as ‘Project Empathy’.

Upon meeting me at Magic Strawberry Sound near Hongdae, SWJA said working with Jung was beyond her imagination.

“Because my music is based on jazz, other artists have a tendency to have difficulty when they first experience it. But the moment Yonghwa-ssi sang it, it was so natural. I thought, ‘This is it!’.”

This project is deeply meaningful to SWJA. Thus far, she has featured in SanE, MC Mong, Primary, and Yoo Heeyeol’s songs, and participated in the making of 2NE1, Lee Hi, GD&Top, and Lee Sunhee's albums. But this is the first time she was able to empathize organically from the beginning of the creative process to its completion. ‘Hello’ produced by Jung Yonghwa and ‘Fireworks’ produced by SWJA are both receiving rave responses. “If I didn’t work with Yonghwa-ssi, I wouldn’t have received as much attention. It’s not an opportunity  often given to musicians like us. It might have been a refreshing experience for Yonghwa-ssi too, but I think it’s allowed an even greater leap for me.”
