'확정' 도장을 찍어버리기엔 다소 들쭉날쭉하던 정용화의 송라이팅이 안정적으로 자리를 잡은 건 지난해 초 발표했던 솔로 앨범 전후가 아닐까 싶다. '어느 멋진 날'에서 '신데렐라', '이렇게 예뻤나'를 한 선으로 이으면 나타나는 선명한 그림이 그려내는 건 '다양한 콘셉트에 맞는 부담스럽지 않은 곡 쓰기'. 봄이라는 계절에 맞춘 경쾌한 악곡은 특유의 심플하지만 귓가에 남는 멜로디와 익숙한 단어들의 조합으로 편안하고 기분 좋은 그루브를 만들어 낸다. 오아시스 등 브릿팝 밴드들의 히트 록발라드 넘버들을 연상시키는 수록곡과 이종현, 이정신 등 어떤 멤버가 어떤 스타일의 곡을 완성했는지 예측해보는 재미도 있는 앨범이다.

미묘

전작 '신데렐라'가 일본산 수입품이 정착된 로커 듀오의 여름 댄스튠 계보였다면, 건강한 '이케멘'과 계절의 결합이란 공식은 이번에도 이어지는 셈이다. 보다 다정한 남성형의 표현에 간혹 "남자는 이래, 여자는 이래"식의 도식화의 흔적이 있기는 하지만, 남들이 건드렸다가 큰 실수를 곧잘 범했던 다이어트나 복장 등의 소재를 무난한 수위로 마무리한 섬세한 안배가 캐릭터를 더욱 강화한다. 차고 넘치는 '홍대풍'과 봄 노래들 속에서 각기의 요소를 가져오면서도, 어느 한쪽으로 쏟아지지 않게 아슬아슬한 밸런스를 잡아낸 것에 감탄한다. 지론이지만 씨엔블루와 정용화는 좋은 팝-가요를 만들어낼 역량을 갖추고 있고, 록 밴드의 틀에 얽매일 이유가 없다. 더구나 상대적으로 록 지향적인 수록곡들이 어르신 취향의 올드록으로 수렴하고 있다면 말이다. 그런 게 진짜 하고 싶은 음악이라면야 그만이지만.

I’d say Jung Yonghwa’s songwriting, which seemed on-and-off to give the "stamp of approval,” was stably established around the time he released his solo album early last year. Connecting ‘One Fine Day’ to ‘Cinderella’ and ‘You’re So Fine’ produces a vivid portrait of “easy-listening songwriting that can tailor to various themes.” The upbeat tune fits the season of spring and creates a feel-good groove by combining his signature, simple yet memorable melodies and everyday words. The album includes tracks reminiscent of rock ballad hits by Brit-pop bands such as Oasis, and it’s also fun to try and guess which members — Lee Jonghyun and Lee Jungshin — composed which styles of music.

Mimyo

The previous release ‘Cinderella’ fell under the genealogy of rocker duo/summer dance tunes that adapted Japanese influences; one could say this formula of combining wholesome ‘ikemen(handsome)’ with the season is at play once again. In expressing their gentler version of the masculine perspective, despite some traces of stereotyping — “males are like this, females are like that” —, they took the care to sensitively sort out the issues such as weight loss and attire (which have often caused blunders from others) further strengthening their character. I’m impressed how, in the flood of “Hongdae-style” and spring tunes, they borrowed each of their elements yet still managed to hit that narrow balance without spilling into one side. It's been my pet theory that CNBLUE and Jung Yonghwa have the potential to create good pop-gayo. They have no reason to be bogged down by the framework of rock band — especially, if the relatively rock-oriented non-title tracks are resorting to the old-style rock favored by the elders. Of course, if they really wanna make that kind of music, that’s all that matters.
