여름은 CNBLUE로 춤추자!
8월 28일, 대망의 일본 메이저 2번째 앨범 "What turns you on"을 발매하는 CNBLUE.
우선 막 발매된 싱글 "Lady"에 수록된 3곡에 대해 들어보았습니다.

일본에서 2번째 앨범 "What turns you on?"의 발매가 결정된 CNBLUE로부터, 여름 신곡 Lady가 도착. 올 여름은 월드투어의 일환으로 Zepp 투어, 서머소닉 참전 등, 일본에서 적극적인 라이브 활동을 전개하는 그들. "Lady"는 젠틀하고 진지한 훈남이라는 그들의 대중적인 이미지와는 상반되는, 성인 남자의 섹시하고 유혹적인 분위기를 가진 디스코 튠. 과연 그들의 실제 모습은 어떤 타입일까?

-이야기를 듣기 전에...용화, 피부가 좋은 느낌의 엷은 다갈색으로 타지 않았나요? (웃음)
용화 아~왜 다들 그렇게 말씀하시는 걸까요. 확실히 최근 골프를 치고 있어서 조금 탔지만요. 일부러 태운건 아닌데, 왜 다들 그렇게까지 말씀하시는지 모르겠어요.

-...랄까, 지금 골프라고 하셨죠? 골프를 치시는 건가요?
용화: 네. 이런건 일찍 시작해두는게 좋지 않나 생각해서요.

-음...그건 무엇을 위해서인가요?
용화 어른들은 모두 골프를 한다는 이미지가 있어서요. 그리고 젊을때부터 해 두면 자세가 좋아진다고 들었거든요. 지금은 월드투어중이라 공연보다 먼저 들어오거나 할 때 골프 연습을 하곤 해요. 최근 한국의 젊은이들 가운데서는 저처럼 골프 치는 사람이 늘고 있어요.

-그렇군요. 그럼 신곡 "Lady"에 대해 들어보고 싶습니다. 이건 일본용으로 만든 곡인가요?
용화 그렇지는 않아요. 발매하는 나라에 구애받지는 않는 쪽이거든요. 그것보다 발매하는 시기에 만들어진 곡을 내는 타입이예요. 이번에 실은 발라드같은 곡도 썼는데, 여름에 맞지 않는다고 생각해서 이번에는 빼고 "Lady"로 하게 되었습니다.

-악곡적으로는 조금 어른스러운 분위기를 가진 댄스튠이네요.
민혁 디스코 리듬이라, 분명 라이브도 분위기가 달아오를 거라 생각합니다. 드럼을 치는 저도 그렇구요.

-디스코라면 일본에서는 작업이라던지, 그런 가벼운 이미지가 있는데요. CNBLUE는 일본에서 훈남, 진지한 록밴드라는 이미지가 강할지도요.
종현 확실히 저희의 이미지는 "gentleman"일까요. 다들 그런 이미지를 가져주져서, 저희도 그렇게 될 수밖에 없지요.

-에, 그럼 실제로는 다르다는 말씀?
종현 그게 아니라요 (웃음). 그런 이미지가 있는데 나쁜 짓을 하면 바로 이미지가 나빠지니까, 더욱 Gentleman, 여러분께서 그리는 이미지대로 될 수밖에 없지 않나 해요.
용화 훈남이나 Gentleman이라는 이미지는 원래부터 저희에게 딱 맞기도 하죠.
정신 즉, 저희와 그 이미지는 뗄 수 없는 관계란 거죠.
용화 저희는 늘 이런 식으로 (특유의 얼굴로) "진지"하니까요.

-흐음...그 말에 거짓은 없나요?
용화 네. 왜냐하면 리더가 이러하니까!!!
정신 (작게) 그건 거짓말 (웃음)
용화 ...(정신을 본다)(
정신 (작게) 아, 농담입니다.

-그렇게 진지해서 더욱 디스코의 이미지가 의외라고 생각해요.
용화 네, 그렇죠. (곧바로 인정, 일동폭소) 그래서 이런 겁니다. "Lady"는 지금까지 해온 저희의 곡 중에 가장 섹시한 곡이니까, 무대 위에서는 디스코적인 분위기가 되는 것.
종현 그 분위기를 낼 수 있도록 노력하는 거죠. 그래도 무대에서 내려온 평소의 저희는 진지합니다.

-뭔가 잘 피해가신 느낌인데요.
종현 아뇨 아뇨. 실은 팬여러분들 외에도 회사나 가깝게 지내는 스탭분들도 진지하다고 하세요.
용화 그래서 골프인겁니다.
종현 다들 운동만 열심히 해요.

-진지하니까 밤에 놀러가는 시간에 디스코 클럽에 가거나 하지는 않는건가요.
정신 전혀 안 가죠.

-정말로?
종현 거짓말이라고 생각하실지도 모르겠지만 (웃음), 전혀 안 갑니다.

-가고 싶다는 생각은 하시죠?
용화 돈도 들구요...
종현 20살 전후에는 놀러가고 싶다고 생각했는데요, 쭉 바빠서 못갔어서 이제와서는 못 가죠. 가도 어떻게 해야 좋은지 몰라요 (웃음). 그리고 지금 저희는 (국제구호단체의) 기아대책홍보대사를 하고 있으니까, 모두의 귀감이 되려고 합니다.

-처음부터 CNBLUE=진지함, 훈남이라는 이미지가 한국-일본 양국에서 생겨났는데 그 계기는 무엇인가요?
종현 그건 잘 모르겠어요.

-기획사의 이미지 전략인가요?
종현 그건 아닌것 같아요.
용화 저희가 수트를 자주 입었어서 그럴지도 모르겠네요.
종현 맞아맞아맞아! 그거다.
용화 맨 처음부터 수트를 입어서 진지한 이미지가 자리잡은것 같아요. 수트를 입는게 또 저희들과 잘 어울리기도 하구요 (웃음).
종현 처음에는 너무 바빠서 전혀 놀 시간이 없었어요. 그런게 2-3년 계속되었죠. 4-5년 지나니까 요즘은 시간이 있어도 지금까지 놀질 않아서 노는 방법도 몰라요. 그러니까 다들 운동에만 매달리죠.

-골프나 근육트레이닝을 하게 된 이유란 거죠!!
용화 그래도 대중적인 이미지는 저희가 만들어내는게 아니라 여러분께서 만드는 거니까요. 지금은 CNBLUE=진지, 훈남, Gentleman. 이 정도면 좋지 않나요?
정신 그리고 저희는 록밴드이지만, 타투가 어울리지 않는 록밴드라는 이미지도 있는 것 같아요 (웃음) 타투만은 하지 말라고 다들 자주 말씀하세요.
종현 타투도 그렇고, 전에 피어싱을 3곳 뚫었는데 지금은 하지 않으니까요.

-라고 말하면서도, 실은 벗으면 등에 짠 하고 타투가 (웃음).
전원 없어요 없어요 (웃음)
용화 그치만, 후훗 (무적의 미소). 저는 등에 타투 범벅입니다.
종현 물고기랑, 용이랑...

-우와~보여주세요!
용화 죄송합니다. 이건 파티파티와의 비밀로. (<-전부 농담. 웃음)

-그럼 두번째 곡인 "Don't Care"에 대해서도 들려주세요. 이 쪽은 어떤 주제로 만든 곡인가요?
용화 이 곡은 "스스로가 외톨이로 살아간다"고 느낀 사람에게 꼭 들려주고싶은 곡이예요. 저에게는 친구도 있고 가족도 있으니까 앞으로도 걱정 없다, 그런 걸 적은 노래입니다.

-사람은 혼자서 살아가는 것이 아니라는 메시지를, CNBLUE를 언제나 응원해주는 팬들의 존재에도 적용해서 그리고 있는데요.
용화 그건 이런 일을 하고 있기 때문에 더욱 써넣은 부분이예요. 저희에게는 가족, 친구 외에도 "팬"이라는 특별한 존재가 있죠. 그런, 일반인들에게는 없는 특권이 있는 일을 하고 있기 때문에 자연스럽게 팬 여러분들이 떠올랐어요. 이제까지의 팬 여러분들과의 인연을 다이렉트하게 가득 담아 적은 노래입니다.

-그럼 사운드에 대해서. 음을 어쿠스틱 쪽으로 하신 이유는요?
용화 만들 때부터 그랬어요. 맨 처음에는 우선 어쿠스틱 기타소리만 있었는데, 녹음할때 종현이가 일렉기타를 넣어줬습니다.

-간주의 브라스 섹션도 분위기가 있어서 인상적이었어요.
용화 아 거기도 만들 때부터 있었어요. 보통 곡은 2번째 훅이 끝나면 랩이나 기타 솔로가 들어가는데, 이 곡은 거기서 브라스가 나오는 것이 특징입니다.
민혁 저는 그 브라스가 굉장히 좋아서, 이 곡을 녹음할때는 특히 드럼 음색을 신경썼습니다. 많이 듣고 곡의 분위기에 맞는 소리를 생각했어요.
용화 이 곡의 연주 자체는 그렇게 화려하지 않지만 들을 때의 느낌이 가장 소중한 것 같아요. 그래서 지금 민혁이가 말한 것처럼 드럼소리의 톤 하나하나 굉장히 신경을 썼습니다.

-결국 "Lady"의 화려하고 디지털한 느낌과는 대조적인 어레인지가 되었네요.
민혁 웬지 세련된 유럽, 영국적인 느낌이 나네요.
용화 실은 이 곡은 포인트가 많아요. 간주에는 바이올린도 들어가 있구요. 그런 연주로 동양적인 분위기가 나기도 하지요. 그래서 사람에 따라 다르게 들을 수 있는 곡인 것 같아요.
정신 이 곡이 외롭게 들리는 분도 있는 것 같아요. 이 곡의 베이스는 굉장히 심플해요. "Lady"에 디지털한 분위기가 있다면, 이 쪽은 어쿠스틱 사운드가 중심이라 이 쪽이 저는 더 "밴드 사운드"같은 느낌이예요.

-3번째의 "Monday"는 용화씨 전문(?)인 망상이랄까 상상에서 주제가 탄생된 곡인가요?
용화 네. 회사에서 일하는 분들 같은 경우 일주일 중 금요일이 가장 기쁘고 일요일 밤이 괴로워지잖아요. 월요일엔 힘들게 아침을 맞지 않나 하는 상상으로 이 곡을 썼습니다.

-앞으로 CNBLUE로서 일본의 Zepp 투어 뒤에도 월드투어가 이어지는데요. 투어에서 라이브 이외의 즐거움이 있다면?
용화 라이브 후에 다같이 식사를 하거든요. 그 나라의 음식을 먹는 거요.

-그 때 술은 하시나요?
민혁 라이브가 끝난 뒤에는 피곤해서요.
정신 많이는 안 마셔요.
용화 스탭분들과 건배 인사를 하기 위해 마시는 정도예요.

-그런 모범생의 벽, 부셔보고 싶다는 생각은 하지 않으세요?
용화 이미 20년 넘게 이렇게 살아와서 무리예요. 앞으로도 저희는 이대로일것 같아요 (웃음).

Let's Dance this summer with CNBLUE!
Set to release their 2nd Major Album, "What turns you on?" on Aug. 28.
We first heard about the 3 tracks included in the recently released single, "Lady".

-Before we hear those things...Yonghwa, your skin looks nicely tanned. (laughs)
YH Ah~ why does everyone say that? Surely I'm a little tanned because I'm playing golf these days. It's not that I tanned purposedly. I don't know why people always mention it.

-...you said golf? You're playing golf?
YH Yes. I thought it's better to start these things early.

-Hmm...what is that for?
YH I have this image that all adults play golf. I also heard it helps the posture if you start early. Right now, we're on our World Tour, so if we go a day early or so I tend to practice golf. In Korea, there's increasing number of young people who play golf like me.

-I see. Then let's ask about the new single "Lady". Is this song written for Japan?
YH Not necessarily. I'm not a type that insists on the releasing country. I rather release songs that are written during that period. In fact, I wrote a ballad-like song too, but it didn't suit summer so that was taken out and we decided on "Lady".

-In terms of music, it's a dance tune with mature tone.
MH It's disco rhythm, so I'm sure it'll bring up the heat in live performances, also for me as I drum.

-When we talk of "disco" in Japan, it has flirty images like trying to seduce someone. But CNBLUE might have more of a gentlemanly, serious rock band.
JH I guess our image is "gentleman", we have to be because everyone considers us that way.

-Eh, so you mean you're different in reality?
JH Not that (laughs). We have the image, so if we do something bad our image gets the direct hit. So we'd have to be how you portray us.
YH The image of "good guys (好靑年)" or "gentleman" suited us well from the beginning.
JS In other words, us and that image are inseparable.
YH We're always "serious" (his trademark face) like this.

-Hmm~ you're not lying about it?
YH No. Because the leader's like this!!!
JS (softly) That's a lie (laughs).
YH ...(Looks at JS)
JS (softly) Ah, that's a joke.

-Because you're so serious, this "disco" image is all the more unexpected.
YH That's right. (Admits right away, all break into laughter) That's how it works. "Lady" is the sexiest song among all of our songs, so on the stage the atmosphere turns into disco.
JH We try to create the atmosphere. But off the stage, we're normally serious.

-Seems like you evaded the question quite well.
JH No, no. In fact, it's not just the fans but the agency & staff members who are near us tell us we're serious.
YH That's why it's golf.
JH Everyone just does sports.

-Is that why you don't go to disco clubs at night?
JS Never.

-Really?
JH You might think it's not true (laughs), but we don't go at all.

-But you think about going?
YH It costs money...
JH Around 20, I wanted to go. But we've been always busy so now we don't know what to do even if we go (laughs). And now, we're goodwill ambassadors but an international hunger relief organization, so we try to be exemplary to everyone.

-From the start, there was the image of CNBLUE=serious, good guys in both Korea and Japan. How did that happen?
JH I'm not sure.

-Is that the agency's strategy?
JH I don't think that's it.
YH Maybe because we used to wear suits often.
JH Right, right, right. That's it!
YH I think it's because we wore suits since the beginning that we have a serious image. And it looks good on us (laughs).
JH At first, we had no time to go out because we were too busy. That continued for 2-3 years. After 4-5 years, even if we have spare time, we don't know how to go out. That's why we all concentrate on working out.

-That's the reason you got into golf and working out!
YH Well, but our public image isn't something we make, it's what all of you make. Right now, CNBLUE=serious, good guys, gentlemen. I think this is alright.
JS Though we're a rock band, it seems like we have the image that doesn't match tattooes (laughs). So many people tell us, "Please don't get tattooes."
JH Including tattooes, I had 3 piercings but nowadays don't wear any.

-That's what you say, but perhaps there's a tattoo when you take off your clothes? (laughs)
ALL No, no (laugh)
YH But, huhu (invincible smile). I have tattooes all over my back.
JH Fish and a dragon...

-Wow, let me see!
YH Sorry, this will be a secret between Pati Pati and me (<-all joking. laughs).

-Let us also hear about the second song "Don't Care". What is the theme of this song?
YH I really want someone who thinks "I'm living alone" to hear this song. I have friends and famly, so there's nothing to worry about. This is what I wrote about.

-The message that people don't live by themselves is also applied to CNBLUE's ever-supportive fans.
YH I wrote that in especially because of what I do. For us, other than family and friends, there are special people called "fans". My work involves that prestige, unavailable to others, so our fans naturally popped in my thoughts. I wrote this song to fully include our connection with the fans thus far, in a direct way.

-Let's talk about the sound now. Is there a reason to writing this in an acoustic style?
YH That's how it was since the beginning. At first, there was only acoustic guitar, but JH inserted the electric guitar for it during the recording.

-The brass section in the interlude was quite impressive.
YH Ah, that was there from the start, too. Usually, at the end of 2nd hook there's rap part or guitar solo, but this song is characteristic in that brass comes out in that position.
MH I really like that brass part, so I paid careful attention to the tone of the drum while recording this song. I listened to it a lot and thought of the sound that suits the mood of the song.
YH The play in this song isn't necessarily fancy, but it feels the most precious to listen to it. Just like what MH said, I paid careful attention to each and every tone of the drum sound.

-In the end, it turned into an opposite arrangement from the fancy, digital-like "Lady".
MH For some reason, it has the trendy European, British vibe.
YH In fact, this song has many points. There's even violin in the interlude, but it still gives off somewhat Oriental tone. I think each listener can take it diffrently.
JS Some people take it as a lonely song. The bass of this song is very simple. If "Lady" sounds digital, this song is acoustic-centered, so to me, this song has more of the "band sound".

-Third track "Monday"--is the theme for this song born from YH's specialty, your imagination?
YH Right. For those who work at offices, Fridays are the happiest and Sunday nights are the most dreaded. I wrote this song imagining how they face Monday mornings in agony.

-As CNBLUE, you'll continue on the World Tour after the Zepp Tour in Japan. Is there any other pleasure you get from tours besides the live performances?
YH When concerts are over, we all go eat together. I'd say eating that country's cuisine.

-Do you drink at those times?
MH After concerts, we get very tired.
JS Not much.
YH We drink just enough for toasting with the staff.

-Do you ever think of breaking down that wall of "good students"?
YH We've already lived more than 20 years this way, it's too hard. I think we'll stay this way (laughs).
