저같은 경우는요, 주제를 생각했을때 아이돌의 전반적인 상황이 떠올랐는데, 막 모든 여러분들이 다 대단하다 이런 풍이라고 지적을 당해서, 그 중에서도 정용화 씨를 골라왔어요. 굳이 씨엔블루라고 하지 않고 정용화라고 한 이유는, 정용화라는 사람의 송라이팅을 높게 사기 때문인데. 아, 정용화라는 사람은 되게 감각적인 송라이터예요. 전체적으로 아주 매끈한 진행을 꾀하면서도 적재적소에서 한번 틀어준다는 거죠. 그래서 포인트를 준다는 건데, 주로 싱얼롱을 유도하는 그런 부분을 넣는. 그런데 이 사람의 강점이 후렴에 있어요. 자연스러운 전개를 해치지 않으면서도 되게 강하게 남는 그런 후렴을 쓰는데요. 이게 본능적으로, 본능적으로 약간 임팩트가 있는 후렴을 쓴다고 해야되나? 약간 그런 걸 쓸 수 있는 능력이 있다고 해야되나? 이게 약간은 제이팝적이기도 하고, 어떤 팀의 초반에 김도훈 씨나 이상호 씨가 썼던 외톨이야라든지, 뭐 러브 그런 노래들? 직감, 이런 노래들 했던 김도훈-이상호 이 콤비 느낌도 나는데, 결론적으로 정용화씨가 나아요. 이 사람들보다도. 이제 정용화만의 스타일이 딱 있거든요. 그래서 보컬 얘기도 좀 빼놓을 수가 없는데. 입자가 거칠면서, 적당히 거친데, 톤이 굉장히 포근한 톤이에요. 그래서, 팝밴드로서는 최적의 보컬. 솔로로 발라드를 부를때도 잘 했어요. 했는데, 지금 씨엔블루같은 팝락에서 좀 최고의 파워를 발휘하는 목소리다 라는 생각을 하고요. 전에는 약간 소리를 작위적으로 만드는, 쿠세라고 하죠. 쪼가 있었는데 지금은 되게 깨끗하고 담백한 소리를 써요. 그래서 어떤 이 사람만의 개성이 확실히 있으면서도, 기본기가 잘 다져져 있는. 그런 가수라고 보고.

그래서 이번에 신곡 나왔는데, '헷갈리게'라는 곡이 타이틀이고 그 EP가 나왔어요. 정용화의 강점이 잘 녹아있는 앨범이다. 이런 생각을 해요. 해서, 전 좀 편견을 버리고 (아이돌이란 편견?) 아이돌이라는 편견도 있고 씨엔블루라는 편견도 있어요. 아이돌 자체를 안 듣는 사람도 있지만, 아이돌 들으면서 락을 좋아하는 사람이, 아 씨엔블루? 데이식스? 뭐야? 이렇게 된다는 거죠. 약간 그런 것들을 편견을 버리고 음악 자체에 집중해 봤으면 하는 생각을 해요. 아무래도 초반 커리어도 있고. 그 초반 막 외톨이야 표절 논란도 있었고 여러모로 악조건이 많았어요. 그래서 그런걸 뚫고 살아남은 팀인데, 쭉 들어보면 이 팀이 아직까지 살아남아서 왕성하게 하고 있는 이유가 딱 보여요. 저력이 있는 팀이라고 생각해요. 저는 그 정도로 정용화라는 사람을 높게 평가하고 있고, 관심있게 지켜보고 있어요. 씨엔블루란 팀도 잘 합니다만은. 정용화씨를 저는 아주 높게 생각을 하고 있습니다. 멜로디를 잘 만들구요.

이건 개인적인 생각인데, 한번쯤 여기 와주면 안될까. 하는 생각을 해요. 한번 섭외를 해보려고요. 20년, 30년이 걸릴지 모르겠지만은 어쨌든 한번쯤은 불러보겠다. (중략) 정용화씨 때문에 싸운 적도 있어요. 다른 음악 듣는 사람이랑. 그 사람은 인디를 좋아하는 사람인데, 그 사람이 진짜 무시를 하는거예요. 그냥 아이돌 자체를. 안 듣는대요, 아예. 좀 짜증나더라고요. 그냥 이상한 인디...이상한 인디가 아니라, 그냥 막 다 모르는 이제 막 나온 팀 다 들어요. 근데 이건 안듣는대요. 왜? 그럼 아~뭐 음악이~ 이렇게 되는거예요. 근데 제가 솔직히 들어보면요, 이 쪽이 곡을 더 잘 써요. 정용화가. 정용화가 곡을 잘 쓰고, 지금 편들고 있는 그 (인디에? 새로운 밴드?) 네. 잘 들리는 대중적인 음악을 잘 쓰는데, 잘 부르고. 어떤 편견이 되게 아직까지도 심하다는 생각을 해서요. 그래서 추천곡을 좀 달고 싶어요. 추천곡은 비교적 좀 최근 앨범들 중에서, 이번에 나왔던 헷갈리게, 그리고 작년에 선우정아씨랑 했던 입김, 또 재작년에 나왔던 솔로 앨범 중에서 윤도현씨랑 같이 부른 노래가 있어요. 추억은 잔인하게. 그리고 작년에 씨엔블루, 아 재작년, 2015년 씨엔블루 앨범 중에서 마마무의 휘인씨랑 같이한 도미노라는 노래가 있어요. 그리고 캐치미. 이렇게 다섯 곡을 추천하고 싶어요. 정용화라는 사람에 대해서 한번 들어보시라. 스타일이 전혀 달라요, 다섯곡이. 근데 이게 전부 정용화 곡이에요. 단독작곡이 세곡, 공동이 두 곡 이렇게 될 거예요. 굉장히 서로 다른 노래들인데 스펙트럼이 넓은데 그 노래들마다 아주 대단히 캐치한 멜로디를 들을 수 있는 그런 노래들이라서 추천을 드리고 싶고. 그래서 정용화 씨를 이렇게 과소평가된 뮤지션으로 가져왔습니다.

As for me, when I thought of the theme, the general situation of the idols came to my mind. But I was criticized it was like saying “everyone’s awesome.” So among them, I picked Jung Yonghwa. The reason I pinpointed Jung Yonghwa and not CNBLUE is because I highly value his songwriting. He usually includes parts that induce sing-alongs, and has a strength with (composing) the chorus. It’s a very smooth progression overall, but he knows how to twist things at the right moments. He gives them a highlight. It’s something instinctive. It’s like he instinctively knows how to write an impactful chorus. He has the ability to do so. It’s a little J-popish, gives me some vibe of the composers Kim Dohoon and Lee Sangho as well, you know the ones who wrote I’m a Loner, Love, Intuition and so on in the early part of their career. But at the end, Jung Yonghwa’s even better than these guys. He has a style of his own. 

I can’t skip the talk on his vocals, either. It’s rough, but to a right amount, and has a very soothing tone. He’s perfectly suited for a pop rock band’s vocalist. He was good singing ballads as a solo, too, but he’s definitely a voice that can show his fullest power in a pop-rock band like CNBLUE. Before, he used to make a bit of contrived sound, in a habitual way, but now he uses very clean sounds. He has his specific individuality, but also has the strong fundamentals. 

His new song is out. The title track is called “Between Us”, I mean the whole EP is out. I think it’s an album that strongly embodies Jung Yonghwa’s strengths. I hope people would put away their prejudice (Q. for being an idol?) I mean, there’s prejudice for being an idol, and for being CNBLUE. Some people don’t listen to idols period. Some listen to idols and like rock music, but say things like, CNBLUE? Day6? What’s so great about them? But I want them to put that away and just focus on the music itself. There was that early career issue, with Loner being mired in a plagiarism controversy and many difficult situations. But they’re a team that overcame those and survived. If you take a full listen, you can surely see why they’ve survived and still promote actively. I think they’re a team with a high potential. That’s how highly I rate Jung Yonghwa, and I’m keeping an interested eye on him. CNBLUE as team is great too. But I really highly regard Jung Yonghwa. He’s a great melody maker.

This is a personal thought, but I wonder if he could come here (for an interview). I’m gonna try to book him. Dunno if it’ll take 20, 30 years but, once, I’ll invite him.

One time, I had an argument because of him with a listener of another music. He/she likes indie music, and that person was putting idol music down so much. Said he/she doesn’t listen, at all. It pissed me off. The person would listen to all of weird..I mean not weird, but all these unknown indie teams. But won’t listen to this. When I ask why, he/she says well the music isn’t (good). But if I honestly take a listen, Jung Yonghwa writes far better music. He composes much better, than whoever that indie team he/she is siding with. He’s good at writings songs that have mass-appeal, and sings them well. But the prejudice is still too high. So I have some recommendations. Among the recent releases, “Between Us” from this album, “Hello” with SWJA last year, “Cruel Memories” from his solo album two years ago which was sung with YDH, and from CNBLUE’s 2015 album, a song called “Domino” with MMM’s Wheein, and Catch Me. I want to recommend these five tracks. Take a listen to find out who Jung Yonghwa is. All of their styles are different. But they’re all composed by Jung Yonghwa. Three are solo compositions and two are co-compositions. They’re very different with each other, showing his wide spectrum, but all of them have very catchy melodies, so I’d like to recommend these and picked Jung Yonghwa as the underrated musician.
