작사-작곡도 소화하는 재능 넘치는 이 아티스트가 300번이나 들은 말은?

“CNBLUE의 곡을 작사-작곡할 때는, 멤버의 취향을 생각해요. 이번에는 솔로인 만큼 자유롭기는 했는데, 그만큼 부담이 컸습니다.”

3월 4일 발매된 앨범 ‘어느 멋진 날~ Japan Special Edition~’으로 솔로활동을 시작한 정용화. 큰 인기를 얻은 밴드 CNBLUE의 일원으로, 인기 드라마의 주연배우로서도 대활약하고 있다. 먼저 솔로 데뷔를 이룬 한국에서는, 음악방송에서 11주 연속 1위를 획득하는 등 (주: 가온 웨이보 차트와 혼동한 듯) 호평을 받았다.

“열심히 만든 데 대한 보상인 것 같아요. 함께 협업해주신 많은 분들의 기대를 짊어지고 있었거든요. 존경하는 한국의 아티스트분들 뿐 아니라, GLAY의 TAKURO씨께서도 눈물 날 것 처럼 멋진 가사를 써 주셨어요. 이번에는 일본의 여러분들께서 어떤 반응을 해 주실지 매우 기대하고 있습니다.”

앨범 제목이 되기도 한 ‘어느 멋진 날’은, 그룹에서는 잘 들어보지 못했던 섬세한 발라드로 완성되었다.

“템포가 빠른 곡이 많아서, CNBLUE와 차별화를 두고 싶었어요. 그래서 타이틀은 발라드로 하고 싶었어요. 듣고 있으면 풍경이 떠오르는 곡을 쓰고 싶었구요.”

행복했던 날들로부터 이별까지를, 예전의 연인에게 말을 걸듯이 노래하는 이 타이틀곡. 이 곡에 딱 맞는 뮤직비디오에서 보여준 키스신은 한국에서 화제가 되기도 했다. 이 이야기를 듣자마자 쓴 웃음을 띄우는 정용화.

“이 이야기를 기자분들로부터 300번쯤 들은 것 같아요 (웃음). 물론, 대본대로 했습니다. 애드립 같은 건 전혀 없었어요. 한치의 차이도 없이, 시키신대로 했습니다!!”

이제 그는 솔로앨범을 들고 아시아 투어의 일본 공연을 시작한다.

“직접 들어주신다고 생각하니 굉장히 기분이 좋습니다. 이런 음악도 만들 수 있구나, 하고 두근두근 해 주셨으면 좋겠어요. 저에게 있어 음악이란, 취미이자 일이기도 합니다. 저의 모든 것이예요.”

엄청나게 바쁜 그에게 스스로에게 있어 “어느 멋진 날”은 언제인지 물었다.

“지금도 멋진 하루하루를 보내고 있지만, 가끔 학창시절로 돌아가고 싶을 때가 있어요. 학교에 가서 친구들을 만나고, 가까운 데로 놀러가고. 그런 그리운, 정말 평범한 하루가 저에게 있어서는 특별한 ‘어느 멋진 날’이 아닐까요.”

[지금의 용화에 접근]

-요즘, 처음 경험해본 것은?

솔로앨범을 냈습니다 (웃음). CNBLUE의 멤버들도 “모든 곡들이 좋네”라고, 매우 호평해주었어요. 

-지금 가장 가고 싶은 곳은?

후지큐 하이랜드. 후지산 근처에 있지요? 거기에 가면, (들어가서) 1시간 정도 걸리는 무서운 귀신의 집이 있다고 들었어요. 그런 곳에 강한 건 아니지만 귀신의 집에 가보고 싶어요.

-가장 갖고 싶은 것은?

딱히 없는데… 비행기일까요? 제 전용으로요. (살 수 있지 않아요?란 물음에) 아뇨 아뇨, 전혀요. 살수 있다면, 장난감 비행기요. 아, 종이 비행기라면 접을 수 있지만 (웃음)

인터뷰 중 유산균음료(*주: 피루쿠루로 추정)를 기쁜 듯이 마시고 있었습니다만…

좋아하거든요. 그래도, 일본에서 처음 마셨을 때 만큼의 감동은 없어졌는지도. 어른이 되었군요 (웃음). 배우로 데뷔했던 드라마 “미남이시네요 (09년작)”이 이제 6년전이군요. 참 많은 것들이 변했네요 (웃음).

What did this talented artist, who can also compose and write lyrics, have to hear 300 times?

“When composing and writing lyrics for CNBLUE, I consider the members’ tastes. This time,as it was for solo, I was freer, but had that much more pressure.”

Jung Yonghwa began his solo promotions with the album “One Fine Day~ Japan Special Edition,” released on March 4th. He’s a member of the widely popular group CNBLUE, who also excels as a lead actor in popular dramas. In Korea where he began his solo activities first, he was successful and topped the charts for eleven consecutive weeks (*note: I think they got it confused with Gaon Weibo chart).

“I think it’s a reward for working hard on it. I was also bearing the expectations of those who collaborated with me. Not only the Korean artists that I respected, GLAY’s TAKURO has also written great lyrics for me that nearly made me tear up. I’m very much looking forward to how the fans in Japan will respond.”

“One Fine Day,” which is also the title of the album, is a delicate ballad, previously rarely heard from the group’s music.

“Since there were many songs with fast tempo, I wanted it to be differentiated from CNBLUE’s. That’s why I wanted the title track to be a ballad. I tried to write a song that would evoke a scenery when listening to it.”

From the happy days to farewell, this title track is sung as if talking to a former beloved. In the music video that perfectly goes with the song, the kissing scene became a hot topic in Korea. Upon hearing this, Jung Yonghwa put on a wry smile.

“I think I’ve heard this about 300 times from the reporters (laughs). Of course, it was on the script. There was no ad-lib whatsoever. Without any deviance, I did as I was told!”

He will now begin the Japanese concerts as part of his Asian tour.

“It’s such a nice feeling to have it personally enjoyed (by fans). I hope they feel excited thinking, he can make this kind of music too! To me, music is both my hobby and my job. It’s my everything.”

To this extremely busy man, we asked when his “One Fine Day” is.

“Though I’m spending fine days each and every day now, sometimes I want to go back to my school days. Going to school, meeting my friends, and hanging out someplace nearby. Those days that I miss, those very normal days would probably be special, “one fine day” to me.”

-What did you experience for the first time recently?

I released a solo album (laughs). Even CNBLUE’s members praised, “All the songs are great.”

-Where do you want to go the most right now?

Fuji-Q Highland. Isn’t it near the Mt. Fuji? I heard there’s a ghost house that takes an hour. It’s not like I’m very tough at those places, but I want to try.

-What do you want to have the most?

Nothing in  particular….a plane perhaps? Just for myself… (Can’t you afford one?) No no, not at all. If I can buy, it’d be a toy plane. Oh, I can also fold a paper plane (laughs)

-During the interview, you were drinking a yogurt drink (*note: likely Pirukuru) so happily…

I like it. But the inspiration I got from the first time I drank it in Japan might not be the same… I’ve grown up (laughs). The drama I debuted as an actor, “You are beautiful,” was 6 years ago. So many things have changed (laughs).
