'아이돌을 넘어' 같은 진부한 얘기는 않겠다. 좋고 싫음을 떠나, 이들은 이미 궤도에 오른 팝 밴드다. 정용화를 필두로 제작의 주도권을 팀으로 가져오면서 발전에 가속이 붙었다. 캐릭터가 자리를 잡는 동안 음악적 역량도 꾸준히 상승했다. 특히 최근 몇 년간 멜로디 전개와 소리 구성, 퍼포먼스 측면에서 한층 매끈해진 결과물을 내놓았다. 공력을 기울인 끝에, 커리어 초반의 잡음과 애티튜드 논쟁을 지나 이제는 독자 영역 구축에 돌입한 모양새다.
새 EP < 7ºCN > 역시 모난 구석은 쉽게 드러나지 않는다. 이번에도 선율과 편곡, 가창과 연주가 '찰떡'처럼 붙는다. 팀으로서는 최초로 외국 작곡가와의 '송캠프'도 거쳤다. 싱커페이션을 동원한 리듬 패턴에 캐치한 후렴을 배치한 '헷갈리게', 브라스를 활용해 팝 멜로디에 생기를 더한 'It's you'의 팝 감각은 이 같은 공동 작업으로 거둔 상승효과다. 어쿠스틱 사운드 중심의 '마니또(Manito)' 역시 좋은 선율을 바탕으로 흡인력을 발휘한다.
기분 좋은 팝 에너지가 앨범 전반에 걸쳐있다. 볼륨에 어울리는 곡 구성으로 유기성도 획득했다. 음악적으로 이렇다 할 결점이 없는 음반의 문제는 기획 단계에서 감지된다. 악기 편성 등 디테일의 차이뿐, 언젠가부터 EP 단위의 작품이 대체로 유사한 색채를 띠는 것. 비슷한 작법, 주제의 타이틀곡과 일정 패턴으로 반복되는 수록곡의 흐름이 일종의 기시감을 초래한다. 정교해진 곡 완성도와는 별개로, 한 장의 음반으로써는 퍽 심심한 결과물의 연속이다.
변주가 필요한 때다. 팝의 최대 강점은 다채로운 팔레트에 뿌리를 둔다. 브랜드를 확립한 팝 밴드의 대부분은 자신만의, 그러나 너른 스펙트럼을 구사했다. 그동안의 씨엔블루가 보컬과 연주 실력을 키우고 악곡 흡수력을 높이는데 집중했다면, 이제는 한 발 나아가 다양한 스타일을 채울 시점이다. 주 무기인 선명한 멜로디를 중심으로 한 음악적 외연의 확장은 선택 아닌 필수다. 현상 유지에 그치는 안일한 기획보다 팀을 한 단계 끌어올릴 기막힌 한 방이 요구된다.

I won't repeat the cliche of "going beyond the level of idol" trope. Whether you like them or not, they're already a pop band on their stable orbit. Since the team has overtaken the helm, steered by Jung Yonghwa, the speed of progress has accelerated. While establishing own character, their musical capability has simultaneous leveled up steadily. Especially in recent years, they've continued to produce much slicker materials in terms of melody progression, sound structure, and performance. Upon honing their craft, they've passed through the early-career controversies and attitude debates, and now are entering the stage of building their own realm.
It's not easy to spot flaws in their new EP "7ºCN". Again, their melody, arrangement, vocals, and instrumentals fit together to a tee. There was even a first for the team, a "song camp" experience. "Between Us," which places a catchy chorus to the syncopated rhythms, and "It's You," that adds energy to its pop melody with brass, showcase improvement in their command of pop, an achievement thanks to the collaborative effort. Acoustic-based "Manito" is also attractive with its well-made melody.
A feel-good energy of pop surrounds the overall album. By selecting the tracks that go along with one another, the organic flow is achieved. The issue with this album, which otherwise has no particular musical shortcoming, is sensed from its planning stage. Aside from a few details, their EP-level products tend to have similar tinges. Similar composing styles and themes of title-tracks, as well as repetition of patterned b-sides give listeners a feeling of deja-vu. Despite the elaborate quality of music, as a whole album, it's quite an uneventful series of listens.
It's time for a jolt of variation. Pop's best strength is rooted in its multicolored palette. Most pop bands that have established their own brand have their signature sounds, but also a wide spectrum. If CNBLUE thus far has focused on leveling up their vocal and instrumental skills and interpretive capacity, now it's time to go one step further and fill (its soundscape) with diverse styles. It's not an option but a must to broaden their musical boundaries, while basing off of their stronghold on vivid melodies. Rather than complacent planning that remains at status-quo, it's now time for an outstanding home-run that would take the team to another level.
