입김 Hello - 비사이드 izm (podcast) 2016년 상반기 최고의 싱글 Best Single of First Half of 2016

올해 상반기에 좋았던 가요를 뽑으면요, 정용화와 선우정아가 함께했던 프로젝트 싱글이 있었죠, 1월달에. 두 곡이 나왔었어요. “불꽃놀이”와 “입김”. 전 그 중에서도 “입김”을 뽑았거든요. “입김”의 경우에는 정용화씨가 썼어요. “불꽃놀이”는 선우정아씨가 썼고. 공동인데, 주도권을 누가 가져가냐 인데, 주도권을 정용화씨가 가져온 노래가 입김이었어요. 사실 상반기에 좋은 노래들이 되게 많았잖아요, 소나무에 티파니, 여자친구, 김윤아, 이상은 다 좋았어요. 그래서 어떤 노래를 뽑을까 했는데, 상대적으로 이 노래가 좀 조망이 안됐던거 같아서, 이 노래를 조망하고 싶었거든요.

사실 정용화라는 사람도 아이돌 거물이라고 해야되잖아요. 거물이고, 선우정아씨도 인디씬에서 라이징스타를 넘어서 이젠 궤도에 오른 뮤지션인데, 그 둘의 작업이었는데도 되게 스무스하게 지나갔어요. 사실 별다른 활동이 없었기 때문이기도 했지만. 그래서 이 노래를 좀 조망하고 싶었어요. 그래서 트위터에서 얘기 한번 했다가 막 알티 몇 백개씩 되가지고 ㅎㅎ

아무튼. 아이돌로 대표되는 메인스트림과 인디의 콜라보는 적잖이 있었거든요, 그 전에도. 그런데 이만큼 서로의 색깔을 잘 유지하면서 블렌딩이 잘 된 우수사례가 많지 않았던거 같아요. 그냥 “했다”에 의미를 두는 콜라보레이션은 많았던 거 같은데, 이 정도로 좋은 노래가 나온 경우는 많이 없었던거 같아서 뽑아봤고.

이 노래는 정용화씨가 멜로디를 썼는데, 정용화씨가 사실 멜로디를 되게 잘 만들어요. 진짜 그 팝한, 캐치한 멜로디를 잘 만드는데, 이 사람 특유의 멜로디메이킹과, 두 사람이 만든 하모니. 정용화씨도 노래를 되게 개성있게 하고, 선우정아씨도 진짜 개성있게 하잖아요 노래를. 정용화씨도 자기 노래들 볼때 되게 특색있잖아요. 캐릭터가.

그 두 사람이 하모니를 진짜 잘 만들었고. 가사의 그런 내러티브 같은 것들이나 편곡도, 재즈풍의 편곡도 되게 훌륭했어요. 특히 듀엣송인데 이 노래를 어떻게 부르냐면, 첫번째 버스를 선우정아씨가 불러요. 자기 얘기를 하면서, 여자 얘기를 하면서. 그리고 후렴을 같이 부르는데 선우정아가 메인에 있는거죠, 그리고 정용화가 백킹 하모니를 쌓고. 그리고 2절에 넘어가서는 정용화가 버스를 부르고, 후렴에서는 정용화가 메인에 선우정아의 백킹. 이런 식으로 가서 되게 재밌었어요. 그런 신선하고 좀 좋은 시도였던 거 같아요. 듀엣송으로.

그리고 마지막에는 같이 1:1…1:1하니까 싸우는거 같다ㅋㅋ 마지막 브릿지에서 넘어가는 후렴은 둘이 같이 잘 부르는. 보컬의 균형감도 참 좋았고. 노래 자체도 좋았고. 커머셜한 히트는 못됐지만, 상반기 이 노래를 놓치지 않아야 한다고 생각해요. 그래서 이 노래를 뽑았고.

If I were to pick a good song in the first half of this year, it’d be the project single by Jung Yonghwa and Sunwoo JungA. In January, they released two songs: “Fireworks” and “Hello”. Among the two, I picked “Hello” written by Jung Yonghwa. “Fireworks” is written by SWJA. They’re both co-written, but the one where Jung Yonghwa took the lead was “Hello”. In fact, there were many great songs in the first half. Sonamoo, Tiffany, Gfriend, Kim Yuna, Lee Sangeun. They were all nice. I gave a thought about which song to pick, but this one rather did not receive as much attention, so I wanted to shed light on this song.

Jung Yonghwa is a big shot among the idols, right? He’s a big shot, and SWJA is also beyond just a rising star in the indie scene, now a musician on her own orbit. Despite being their project, it went away too quietly. I guess it’s also because there wasn’t much promotion to it. That’s why I wanted to shed light on this song. I mentioned it on twitter, got several hundred retweets and all.

Anyway, there have been quite a few collaboration projects between the mainstream, represented by idols, and the indie scene even before this. But there weren’t many excellent cases that kept the color of each artist while blending them so well. Many of them just found meaning in that it “happened.” But it was rare for the music to be this good, so I picked it.

The melody of this song is composed by Jung Yonghwa. In fact, he’s very good at making melodies. He’s really good at writing those poppy, catchy melodies. On top of his distinct style of melody-making, there was the harmony of the two. Jung Yonghwa sings in a very unique way, as does SWJA. When you look at Jung Yonghwa’s songs, he has a very distinct vocal character. 

The two created such a nice harmony. The narrative of the lyrics and the arrangement as well, the jazzy arrangement, are superb. Especially interesting was how they sang it: the first verse is sung by SWJA. She talks of her own story, the woman’s side of the story. Then when they sing the chorus, SWJA is the main vocalist and JYH builds the backing harmony. In the second verse, JYH sings it and the chorus puts JYH as the main while SWJA backs it. This was really interesting. I think it was a good, refreshing challenge as a duet.

And in the end, they go one on one…that sounds like they’re in battle, haha. The chorus that follows the final bridge is sung so well by the two. I really liked the balance of the vocals, loved the song it self. Though it wasn’t a commercial hit per se, I think you shouldn’t miss this song. That’s why I picked it.
