씨엔블루의 ‘Can't Stop’이 꾸준한 인기를 누리며 롱런에 성공하고 있다.
지난 17일자 일간 차트에서 씨엔블루의 ‘Can't Stop’은 멜론 9위를 비롯해 몽키3 6위, 지니 11위, 엠넷 12위, 올레뮤직 12위, 네이버뮤직 15위, 소리바다 18위, 싸이뮤직 17위, 벅스 19위, 다음뮤직 24위 등 대부분의 음원사이트에서 상위권을 유지하고 있다.
사실 새로운 봄캐럴에 등극하며 놀랄만한 저력을 과시하고 있는 소유x정기고의 ‘썸’이나 더블 타이틀곡 ‘Come Back Home’과 ‘너 아님 안 돼’ 두 곡을 모두 히트시킨 2NE1, 국민 걸그룹 소녀시대의 ‘Mr.Mr.’ 등 최상위권에 포진한 경쟁작들과 비교하면 씨엔블루의 이 같은 순위는 다소 낮다고 느껴질 수도 있다.
하지만 씨엔블루의 인기가 의미 있는 이유는 바로 온전히 ‘자신들의 음악’으로 이뤄낸 결과라는 점이다.
앞서 씨엔블루는 전작 ‘Re:BLUE’를 통해 앨범 수록곡 모두를 자작곡으로 선보이기 시작했고, 이번 ‘Can`t Stop’ 역시 마찬가지이다.
특히 ‘Re:BLUE’의 경우 ‘우리도 이런 음악을 할 수 있다’라는 식의 다양한 장르를 보여주는데 초점을 맞췄다면 ‘Can`t Stop’은 씨엔블루라는 밴드의 정체성과 이후 음악적 방향을 확실히 제시했다고 평할만하다.
실제 정용화는 이번 앨범을 두고 “개인적으로는 이번 앨범이 앞으로 씨엔블루의 방향성을 제시하고 있다고 생각한다. 브릿팝이지만 아시아의 감성은 잃지 않으려고 했으며, 대중들이 좋아할 한국적인 감성을 담아내려했다. 우리 네 명의 포맷에 잘 어울리는 스타일이라고 생각한다”라고 밝힌바 있다.
앨범의 완성도에 대한 평가도 호평이 주를 이룬다. 록의 마에스트로로 불리는 김바다는 “초기 비틀즈의 느낌이 난다”라며 좋은 평가를 내렸고, 여러 가요관계자들은 이구동성으로 “한층 성숙해지고 음악적 완성도가 높다”라고 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다.
또한 이런 앨범의 완성도는 단순히 차트 순위를 넘어 직접적으로 리스너들에게 나타나고 있다. 실제 씨엔블루 멤버들이 “처음으로 지인이나 친구들에게서 그저 ‘축하한다’라는 반응이 아닌 ‘노래 좋다’라는 반응이 나와서 뿌듯했다”라고 밝히기도 했다.

단순히 ‘나이가 어리다’, ‘음악방송에서 활약 한다’, ‘소녀팬이 많다’, ‘사랑노래가 많다’와 같은 이유는 밴드를 평가할 기준이 되지 못한다. 일례로 본 조비(Bon Jovi)나 에어로스미스(Aerosmith)와 같은 밴드들도 젊은 나이에 데뷔해 소녀팬들의 지지를 업고 메이저 시장에서 활동하며 다양한 사랑노래를 발표했으나 록의 전설로 인정받고 있다.
결국 밴드를 평가하는 것은 좋은 노래와 이를 위한 노력과 열정이다. 씨엔블루의 음악적 성장과 롱런은 국내 메이저 시장에서도 록음악이, 밴드음악이 성공할 수 있다는 것을 보여 줬다는 점에서 분명 의미를 부여하고 반겨할 만한 일이다.

According to daily charts for March 17th, CNBLUE's 'Can't Stop' was ranked 9th on Melon, 6th on Monkey3, 11th on GENIE, 12th on Mnet, 12th on Olleh Music, 15th on Naver Music, 18th on Soribada, 17th on Cy Music, 19th on Bugs, and 24th on DAUM.
Many people might find that CNBLUE's 'Can't Stop' is not as overpowering, compared to SoYou x JunggiGO's 'Some', 2NE1's 'Come Back Home' and 'Gotta Be You', and Girls' Generation's 'Mr.Mr.'
However, the reason why CNBLUE needs to be the spotlighted is because they are competing with songs of their own compositions.
From 'Re:BLUE' album, CNBLUE started presenting songs of their own compositions, and 'Can't Stop' is fully composed of tracks of the members' own compositions.
While 'Re:BLUE' focused on CNBLUE's versatility, 'Can't Stop' expresses CNBLUE's identity, and the direct that they will go in the future.

The quality of the album is getting proved not only by music chart rankings, but by the listeners' reactions. When just releasing the album, CNBLUE members said, "We were very happy when people around us started talking specifically about the songs instead of saying casual congratulations."
These days, people tend to evaluate young bands by their appearances and the merit that they hold as 'idol stars'.
CNBLUE could not get away from such measurements, and they had to suffer a lot of criticisms as well. However, they did not lose their identity as a rock band, and kept pioneering their way.
