방송은 라이브 보여줄 수 없어 공연 선호"

한번 들어도 따라부를 수 있는 곡이 특기

아이돌 밴드. 2007년 FT아일랜드가 데뷔할 때만 해도 도저히 어울릴 것 같지 않은 두 단어의 조합은 제법 익숙한 명칭이 됐다. ‘밴드 명가’ FNC엔터테인먼트를 모태로 씨엔블루ㆍ엔플라잉ㆍ허니스트 등 밴드형 아이돌의 데뷔가 꾸준히 이루어졌고, 댄스 일색이었던 JYP엔터테인먼트도 매달 2곡씩 신곡을 발표하는 데이식스를 통해 새로운 변화를 꾀했다. 여기에 ‘슈퍼스타K’ 출신인 정준영이 이끄는 드럭레스토랑과 남태현이 위너 탈퇴 후 결성한 사우스클럽까지 더해져 이제는 K팝의 한 축을 담당하게 될 정도로 몸집이 커진 것이다.

그중에서도 씨엔블루는 이 장르를 대표하는 그룹이다. 데뷔곡 ‘외톨이야’를 시작으로 ‘사랑빛’ ‘캔트 스톱(Can’t Stop)’ 등 내놓는 곡마다 히트한 것은 물론이요, 데뷔앨범 ‘블루토리(Bluetory)’에서 1곡으로 시작한 작곡 비율은 미니 4집 ‘리:블루(Re:BLUE)’에 이르러 6곡 전곡으로 확대되는 등 승승장구해왔기 때문이다. 특히 리더이자 보컬을 맡고 있는 정용화(28)는 솔로 앨범 ‘어느 멋진 날’로 가수 겸 프로듀서뿐만 아니라 드라마 ‘미남이시네요’, ‘넌 내게 반했어’ 등으로 연기자로 자리매김하면서 아이돌의 수혜를 가장 많이 입은 주인공이다.

자연히 동선도 글로벌하다. 지난해에는 프랑스에서 하반기 방영예정인 JTBC 드라마 ‘더 패키지’의 촬영을 마쳤고, 지난 2월 중국에서 개봉한 영화 ‘결전식신(決戰食神)’이 끝나기 무섭게 지난달부터 아시아 투어 길에 올랐다. 강호동ㆍ김희선과 함께 하는 올리브 예능 프로그램 ‘섬총사’를 위해 한 달에 한 번은 섬에 들어가는 것도 모자라 이달 두 번째 솔로 앨범을 낼 예정이라니 그에게 밴드로 산다는 건 과연 어떤 의미일까.

서울 청담동 FNC에서 만난 정용화는 “합주를 통해서 음악을 만들 수 있는 사람들이 곧 밴드”라고 정의했다. 그 악기가 뭐가 됐든 장르가 어떻든 간에 함께 음악을 즐길 수 있으면 그걸로 족하다는 얘기다. “처음엔 저희도 ‘너네가 밴드냐’고 손가락질하는 사람들을 많이 의식했어요. 누가 들어도 록이라는 느낌을 주기 위해 일부러 안넣어도 되는 기타를 징징징 쳐대고 엄청 오버했죠. 그런데 2013년에 월드투어를 하면서 그런 생각이 많이 없어진 것 같아요. 이렇게 우리 음악을 좋아해주는 사람들이 많은데 좀 더 자신감을 가져도 되지 않을까 싶더라고요. 그때부턴 좀 편안해졌어요.”

지난 5월 일본에서 11번째 싱글 '셰이크'를 발매하고 아레나 투어를 하고 있는 씨엔블루.

Q : 어느 순간부터 공연 소식이 더 자주 들리는 것 같다.

A : 아무래도 음악 방송은 제약이 너무 많다. 우리는 라이브를 하고 싶은데 여건이 되지 않아서 할 수 없는 경우도 많고. 게다가 다른 아이돌은 춤을 추니까 보여줄 수 있는 게 많은데 우리는 악기를 들고 서 있으니 항상 똑같은 모습만 보여지니까 아쉬움이 크다.

Q : 콘서트로 쌓인 흥을 방출하는 건가.

A : 그렇다. 무조건 달려야지. 하도 무대 위를 돌아다니니 경호원이 하소연한 적도 있다. 그래도 비싼 돈 주고 왔는데 최대한 만족할 만한 무대를 선사하고 싶다. 그래서 3일을 하면 세트리스트(선곡표)를 세 가지 버전으로 만든다. 같은 노래라도 부를 때마다 조금씩 바꿔 부르고. 멤버들도 처음엔 당황했는데 이제 눈빛만 봐도 알아서 잘 따라온다.

Q : 관객들도 다같이 달리게 만드는 게 쉽진 않을텐데.

A : 우리 무대를 처음 보는 사람도 한 번 들으면 바로 따라 부를 수 있도록 처음부터 의식을 하고 곡을 쓰는 편이다. 후렴 부분은 같은 단어를 반복적으로 사용한다든가. 콜드플레이나 마룬파이브 같은 유명한 밴드 공연을 연구해 봐도 계속 달릴 순 없지만 처질만 하면 타이틀곡을 넣어서 완급조절을 하더라.

Q : 작곡은 언제 처음 시작했나.

A : 중고등학교 때도 밴드를 계속 했으니까 데모 프로그램을 다운받아서 이것저것 만져보긴 했다. 연습생으로 서울 올라오고 나서는 한승훈 부사장님과 숙소 생활을 했는데 외출하면 몰래 컴퓨터 켜서 해보고 피아노도 몰래 치면서 써보고 그랬다. 계속 들키니까 가르쳐주시더라.

Q : 밴드여서 특별히 신경쓰는 부분이 있는지.

A : 처음엔 음악적 취향이 전부 달랐다. 그래서 그걸 다 고려하기가 쉽지 않았는데 지금은 많이 비슷해졌다. 노래에도 쿠세(습관)가 있듯이 악기에도 그런 게 있다. 드럼을 여기서 멈추는 걸 좋아한다든가 기타는 이 음 다음에는 저 음으로 가는 걸 선호한다든가 그런 걸 맞춰주는 편이다. 앨범도 리듬감 있는 노래가 나오면 어쿠스틱한 것도 넣고, 로킹한 곡이 있으면 달달한 곡도 더해서 구성을 맞추는 편이다.

오는 10월 방송예정인 드라마 '더 패키지'. '미남이시네요' 등을 통해 한류스타로 떠오른 정용화는 이연희와 호흡을 맞췄다.

Q : 본인은 어떤 스타일에 강한가.

A : 아무래도 달달한 곡을 좀 더 쉽게 쓰는 것 같다. 눈치가 빨라서 이런 말을 하면 좋아하는구나 하고 관찰한 게 도움이 많이 된다. 사실은 불평불만을 늘어놓는 스타일을 진짜 싫어한다. 누가 욕하고 안 좋은 얘기 하는 걸 들으면 짜증나지 않나. 그래서 최대한 긍정적인 힘을 주자, 좋은 말만 하자 그런 주의다. 영화로 치면 12세 관람가 같은 느낌?

Q : 씨엔블루와 솔로 앨범은 어떻게 다른가. 새 앨범 힌트를 좀 준다면.

A : 혼자할 땐 실험이 좀 더 자유로운 것 같다. 씨엔블루가 그런 스타일을 하진 않지만 내가 가장 좋아하는 밴드는 오아시스다. 사운드는 거친데 가사는 따뜻하고. 트로피컬처럼 요즘 유행하는 음악을 할 수도 있고. 입으로 악기 소리를 내거나 보컬 이펙트도 많아졌는데 그런 것도 해보고 싶다. 로꼬 등 다양한 피처링도 준비하고 있다.

정용화는 자신을 두고 “왜 일탈을 해야 하는지 모르는 사람”이라고 표현했다. 일을 하다 보면 해외 스케줄이 생겨 여행을 가게 되고, 섬에 가서 좋은 것만 보고 맑은 공기 마시고 돌아오면 좋지 않냐는 논리다. 그러니 1년 365일이 모자랄 수밖에. 20대가 남의 것을 뺏고 빼앗기는 ‘해적선’ 같았다는 그는 아이돌 밴드 후배들을 위해 공연장을 짓는 게 꿈이라고 밝혔다.

“저는 그 친구들이 경쟁자라고 생각하지 않아요. 우리가 이미 욕은 많이 먹었으니 꽃길만 걷게 도와주고 싶죠. 일본 밴드 시장이 큰 이유는 공연할 공간이 많아서인 것 같아요. 우리는 첫 공연을 하고 다음 공연장으로 가려면 무조건 2배 이상으로 가야 해요. 5000석 다음엔 1만석, 그 다음은 2만석 이런 식으로. 하지만 1000석, 2000석, 3000석 규모로 다양한 공연장이 있으면 그만큼 다양한 밴드가 생존할 수 있단 얘기거든요. 그래서 기회가 된다면 8000석 정도 공연장을 한 번 만들어보고 싶습니다.”

"Idol band," the combination of the two words that did not seem to ring together when FTISLAND debuted in 2007, has become a familiar label now. The band-style idols continued to debut, such as CNBLUE, Nflying, and Honeyst from the band-famous FNC Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment, which had been only known for their dance groups, also brought changes through Day6 releasing new songs every month. Drug Restaurant led by Jung Joon-young, who debuted from 'Superstar K', and South Club formed by Nam Tae-hyun who withdrew from Winner, have joined to form a substantial axis of Kpop together.

Among them, CNBLUE is the representative group of this genre. Beginning with the debut track "I'm a Loner," songs such as "Love Light" and "Can't Stop" were hits after another. Self-composed songs that started with one track in the debut album, "Bluetory," have expanded to all 6 tracks in the mini 4th album 'Re: BLUE.' In particular, Jung Yonghwa (28), who is a leader and vocalist, is one of the most successful case among idols: he released his solo album 'One Fine Day' as both the singer and the producer, while establishing himself as an actor through dramas such as "You're Beautiful" and "Heartstrings."

Naturally, his stage is global. Last year, he finished filming the JTBC drama 'The Package' in France, which is scheduled to air in the second half of this year. After his film 'Cook Up a Storm' was released in China last February, he has been on the Asian Tour since last month. For the variety show "Island Trio," where he stars with Kang Hodong and Kim Heeseon, he enters islands once a month. This month, he will release his second solo album. What does it mean to live as part of a band to him?

Jung Yong Hwa, whom we met at the FNC Entertainment in Cheongdam-dong, defined bands as, "people who can make music through ensemble." Regardless of the genre, no matter what the instrument is, if you can enjoy the music together, that's enough. "At first we were very conscious of the people who criticized whether we are a band. To give the feeling of 'rock music' to whoever that heard it, I would insert guitar sounds even where it was unnecessary, totally overdoing it. But in 2013, while on the world tour, much of that thought disappeared. There were a lot people who love our music, so I thought I could have more confidence. I was a little relaxed from then on. "

Q: From a certain point, it seems like I hear more about your concert news (than tv appearances).

A: There are too many restrictions on music shows. We want to perform live, but we can't do it because of limitations in many cases. Besides, other idols have much to show through dancing, but we just stand with our instruments and show the same thing, which leaves much to be desired.

Q Are you releasing your pent-up excitement through concerts?

A: Yes. I have to go at it full-on no matter what. 'Cause I move around so much on stage, a bodyguard once complained to me. But since they paid a high price to watch our shows, I want to present them with the most satisfying stage. Say we perform for three days, we would make three versions of the setlist. Even when singing the same song, I'd change it up a bit each time. Members were a bit confused at first, but now they follow along fine just by checking out my signs.

Q: It wouldn't be so easy for the audience to follow you along.

A: From the writing phase, I consciously make my songs so that people can sing along right away after listening just once. For instance, I'd repeat the same word in the chorus. I studied concerts of bands like Coldplay and Maroon 5, and though it's difficult to keep going with energy, they would moderate it by including title tracks every now and then.

"I originally used guitar often to give my songs a rock vibe, but nowadays I tend to start working on the piano," said JYH.

Q: When did you begin to compose?

A: I was in a band throughout middle and high schools, so I'd download a demo program and play around with it. After coming to Seoul as a trainee, I lived with our vice president Han Seunghoon. When he went out, I would turn on his computer and compose, and secretly wrote music playing the piano. As I kept getting caught, he taught me.

Q: Is there a particular consideration you make for being in a band?

A: At first, our musical tastes were all different. So it was not easy to consider them all, but now we've become very similar. Just as there are habits for singers, there is something for instrumentalists. (MH) likes to stop the drums at this point, or (JH) prefers to play that chord after this chord. I tend to accommodate such preferences. In our albums, if it includes a rhythmical song, we add acoustic ones; if there's a rocking song, we add something sweet so the structure is integrated.

Q: What's your strong suit?

A: I think it's easier to write a sweet song. I'm very quick at reading the atmosphere, so I tend to observe what people like to hear, and that helps me a lot. In fact, I really dislike it when people complain all the time. Don't you get annoyed when you listen to people cursing or badmouthing? My principle is to just give positive energy as much as possible, let's just say nice things. Like PG-13 rating for films.

Q: How are CNBLUE and solo albums different? Give me some hints about the new album.

A: When I do it alone, I think I'm more at liberty to experiment. Although CNBLUE does not have that style, my favorite band is Oasis. The sound is rough, but the lyrics are warm. You can play trendy music like tropical sound. There are many instrumental sounds and vocal effects you can make through your mouth, and I would like to try something like that. I'm preparing many diverse featuring artists, including Loco.

Jung Yonghwa described himself as "a person who does not know the reason to deviate." During the course of his work, he gets to go overseas for schedules, and he can also go to the island and just enjoy the nice view and clean air. That makes 365 days too short for him. As someone who describes his twenties as a "pirate ship" where he had to steal and get stolen from, he has a dream to build a concert hall for younger idol bands.

"I don't think of them as competitors. We've already taken much of the brunt, so I want to help them walk the flowery road. It seems like market for bands are big in Japan because they have many venues to perform. In South Korea, say we hold our first show, then the following one must attract twice as many audience to enter the next level of venue. After 5,000 seats, then 10,000 seats, then 20,000 seats. But if you have halls with 1000 seats, 2000 seats and 3000 seat-capacity, you can have that many different bands that survive. If there is a chance, I would like to build a concert hall that can seat about 8000 people."
