성공보다 실패가 더 많았던 아이돌 록 밴드 시장에서 씨엔블루는 의외로 많은 오해와 착오를 드러냈다. 쉬운 접근과 단순한 소재만을 택하면서 록이란 장르를 허울로 만들었다는 혐의는 쉽게 떨어지지 않는다. 반면 지금까지의 활동이 방증하는 음악에 대한 열의나 라이브 무대에서 보여준 호응 및 실력의 측면에 비해 과소평가를 받아온 그룹이기도 하다. 그저 그런 찬사와 거센 비아냥거림이 혼재하는 양상이다.

유난히 국내에서는 씨엔블루에게 호의적인 시선이 따라주지 않았다. 아이돌과 인디 음악으로 대중가요가 크게 이분되어 버린 상황에서 특별히 발을 디딜 곳이 없기도 했지만 그만큼 음악으로 스스로의 돌파구를 마련하지 못한 까닭도 컸다. 이런 상황에서 < Can't stop >은 약간의 클리셰에도 불구하고 씨엔블루가 그려가는 꾸준함과 미래에 대한 가능성을 보여준다.

전체를 이끌어가는 쌍두마차는 역시 'Can't stop'과 'Diamond girl'이다. 특히 'Diamond girl'은 빠른 템포에 브라스 세션까지 가미하며 허약한 부분을 보한다. 앨범을 통틀어 가장 역동적이면서도 거대한 사운드를 자랑하며 긴 잔상을 남긴다. 예전부터 밴드의 멤버들이 자작곡을 실어왔다는 것 역시 큰 미덕이다. 이 자작곡들은 유의미한 형태로 남을 기록들이며 씨엔블루가 평범한 기획된 아이돌 이상으로 뻗어나갈 가능성을 보여주는 사료인 셈이다.

준수한 구성과 멜로디 위로 같은 패턴의 동어반복은 여전하다. '독한 사랑 (Cold love)'이나 'Love is...'는 평범한 가요의 외피를 걸쳤음에도 현시점의 다른 팝보다 우세한 경쟁력을 보이지 못한다. 모나지 않게만 쓴 가사와 구태의연한 소재 선택에서 특별한 고민의 흔적 또한 찾아볼 수 없다. 씨엔블루의 팬 이외의 사람들에게 음악적으로 어필할 수 있을만한 요소가 부재하다. 안이한 음악적 태도가 이들 스스로를 버블껌 밴드의 영역에 가두어버린 것이다.

냉소적인 시선이 난무하는 상황에서도 씨엔블루에 대한 검증은 쉽사리 사그라지지 않을 것이다. 밴드라는 음악 포맷이 대중가요로 침투하기 힘든 현실에서 상대적으로 건재하게 살아남은 보이 밴드인 탓이다. 비주얼을 겸비하며 대중적 인기를 안고 가기로 한 이상 아이돌 록 밴드가 그 음악적 지평을 넓히기란 쉽지 않다. 그럼에도 발전의 씨앗은 스스로에게 있다. 그 위치 역시 먼 곳이 아닌 지척이다. 이제야 씨엔블루는 그 발전의 단초를 머금었다.

In the idol rock band market, filled with more failures than successes, CNBLUE uncovered more misunderstandings and mistakes. The accusation against them for creating an empty shell out of the genre of 'rock', by taking easy approaches and simple subjects, is not easily dropped. On the other hand, they are also a group that have been underrated compared to the passion toward music or the responses and skills displayed on live stages, proven in their promotions thus far. For the moment, mediocre praises and loud jeers coexist.

Particularly within Korea, positive perspectives have not been directed toward CNBLUE. Though they did not quite have a space to position themselves in the popular music scene bifurcated into idol and indie music, it was also largely because they could not make breakthroughs with their own music. In this circumstance, despite a hint of cliche, 'Can't Stop' shows the consistency and potential for the future that CNBLUE may create.

The two-horse carriage that leads the whole album is indeed 'Can't Stop' and 'Diamond girl'. Especially, 'Diamond Girl' adds brass session to the fast tempo, supplementing the weak components. Exhibiting the most dynamic and grand sounds out of the entire album, it leaves the longest lingering impression. It is also a great virtue that the members have included their self-compositions for a while. These self-compositions are lasting records that will prevail, that display the possibility of CNBLUE to go beyond the status of a common, produced idol.

On top of decent structure and melodies, they still show redundancy of same patterns. 'Cold Love' and 'Love is...' seem like average gayo on the outside, without much edge over other contemporary pop music. I can't seem to find much trace of contemplation in the well-behaved lyrics and platitude in the choice of subjects. There is a lack of elements that can appeal musically to those other than CNBLUE's fans. The easygoing musical attitude limited themselves within the boundaries of a bubblegum band.

Despite the abundance of cynical views, attempts to verify CNBLUE will not easily subside. In the realities of popular music where it's difficult for the band format to permeate, they are a boy band that has survived, relatively in good health. It's not an easy task for an idol rock band to broaden that musical frontier, since they have embraced the path to garner mass popularity with their looks. Nonetheless, the seeds of their progress must come from within. It's not far away though, it is within a close reach. Finally, CNBLUE has obtained a sign of that progress.
