【E】“이 조합 어때요?”…이승철에게 추천하는 뮤지션 셋! Three Musicians Recommended for Lee Seungchul

이승철만큼 신인 작곡가에게 관대한 가수도 없다. 지난 2013년 발매된 정규 11집에서는 실용음악과 학생들에게 두 개의 트랙을 할애했다. ‘늦장 부리고 싶어’와 ‘40분 차를 타야해’가 그 주인공이다. 지난해 발표한 정규 12집에서도 신인 작곡가 김유신, 한수지를 기용해 ‘마더’와 ‘시련이 와도’를 탄생시켰다.
그렇다면 이런 조합은 어떨까. 홍대 인디신에서 떠오르는 뮤지션과 이승철의 만남이나, 아이돌 싱어송라이터, 혹은 힙합-알앤비 프로듀서와의 만남 말이다. 상상이 안 된다고? 글쎄, 의외의 곳에서 접점을 발견할 수 있을지도 모른다.

“그룹사운드의 느낌을 내고 싶었어요. 노래를 들으면 ‘이 사람은 밴드 출신이구나’ 느낄 수 있도록 말이에요.”
지난해 정규 12집 음반 발매 당시 이승철은 이렇게 말했다. 흔히 발라드 음악은 아르페지오(화음이 펼쳐지는 것)를 중심으로 진행되기 마련. 그러나 이승철은 ‘밴드 보컬’로서의 정체성을 확고히 했다. 12집 타이틀곡 ‘시간 참 빠르다’를 들어보면, 리프(짧은 구절이 반복되는 것)를 중심으로 멜로디가 진행되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
정용화는 또래 뮤지션 가운데 발군의 송라이팅 실력을 보이는 인물 중 하나다. 특히 록과 팝을 어우르는 감각이 훌륭하다. 최근 출시한 ‘이렇게 예뻤나’를 비롯해, 선우정아와 함께 한 ‘교감’ 프로젝트, 지난해 발표한 ‘신데렐라’ 등이 그 사례. 대중적인 선호를 벗어나지 않으면서도, 나름대로의 실험을 이어나가는 모습이 인상적이다.
두 사람의 교집합은 ‘밴드’라는 정체성. 그룹사운드를 기반으로 하되, 팝 적인 접근 역시 놓치지 않는다는 점 또한 비슷하다. 다만 세대가 다른 만큼 선호하는 멜로디나 구성이 다를 텐데, 그 간극에서 발생할 신선함이 가장 큰 기대 포인트이다.

“I wanted to give off the vibe of band music; when they listen, people can sense, ‘he’s from a band.'”
Lee mentioned this when he released his 12th full album last year. Though most ballad songs tend to have the arpeggio progression, Lee Seungchul consolidated his identity as a “band vocalist”. Listening to the title track “Times Flies By,” you can hear that the melody progresses with riffs (repetition of short phrases).
Jung Yonghwa is one of the musicians of his generation with outstanding song-writing skills. Specifically, his sensibility that traverses rock and pop is superb. The recent release “You’re So Fine,” “Project Empathy” with Sunwoo Junga, and last year’s “Cinderella” are such examples. It’s impressive how, while maintaining the style of music that the general public prefers, he continues his own way of experimentation.
Their identities converge as “band” musicians. Though based on band music, they both maintain their hold on poppy style. But as they belong in different generations, their tastes in melody and composition may differ. The fresh sensibilities that may arise from such a gap is what I anticipate the most.

FYI, Lee Seungchul is a former vocalist of the legendary band Boohwal and also has a very solid career as a soloist following his departure. The other musicians mentioned are Billy Acoustie and Dean - two of the most up and coming musicians these days! :D
