씨엔블루의 출연과 대미를 장식한 퍼퓸

개인적으로 이번 록 인 재팬에서 가장 상징적이라 할 만한 무대는 바로 씨엔블루와 퍼퓸의 공연이 아니었나 싶습니다. 물론 폴리식스의 13년 연속 출장, 안전지대라는 의외의 네임드 캐스팅과 5년만의 록 인 재팬으로 귀환한 범프 오브 치킨 등 주목할 만한 순간은 많았지만, 이 두 가지를 꼽은 것은 아무래도 우리나라와 일본 양국이 가지고 있는 '록'에 대한 생각의 온도차를 가장 대표적으로 보여주지 않나 싶어서입니다.

사실 해외밴드들이 출연하는 < 썸머소닉 >이나 < 후지 록 페스티벌 >과는 달리 이 무대는 존 스펜서 블루스 익스플로젼(THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION)이 2001년'손님'의 개념으로 왔다 간 이후 전혀 해외 뮤지션들의 유입을 허락지 않았던 콧대 높은 곳이기도 합니다. 여기에 주최 측인 < Rockin' On >은 자기들만의 울타리를 만든다는 비판을 받고 있을지언정 가능성이 있는 뮤지션들에게는 전방위적인 푸시를 서슴지 않는 집단이고요.

이 말인 즉슨 1만명 규모의 레이크 스테이지를 씨엔블루에게 내줬다는 것 자체가 일본 록 신으로의 완전한 편입을 인정했다는 이야기가 됩니다. 우리나라에서는 여러 차례 불미스러운 일로 인해 이미테이션 밴드로 낙인이 찍혀버렸지만, 공연을 보며 '자업자득이지'라는 생각 한편으로 왠지 모르게 안타까운 마음을 금할 수 없었습니다. 4~50분을 이끌어가는 데에 있어서 전혀 무리가 없는 보컬과 연주력, 여느 밴드들만큼이나 스타성 있고 대중성을 겸비한 이들이 정작 그 수많은 국내 페스티벌에는 초대받지 못한 채 일본에서만 설 수 밖에 없다는 사실이 말이죠. 물론 그들이 한국에서 저지른 일들을 배제할 수는 없지만, 태생적으로 이들을 록 밴드라 인정하지 않는 한국의 대중들과 본인들이 만들고 연주하고 노래하는 데 왜 록 밴드가 아니냐 되묻는 일본의 대중들. 이러한 시선의 엇갈림이 양국 음악신의 차이를 야기한 원인중 하나가 아닌가 싶었습니다. '록'이라는 장르에 대한 열린 시선과 기획사의 올바른 대처 및 인디신에 대한 배려가 동반되었다면 우리나라 록 페스티벌에 씨엔블루가 등장하는 일도 가능하지 않았을까요. 좀 더 대중성과 다양성이 동반되었으면 하는 필자의 입장에서는 반가우면서도 아쉬운 마음이 한가득이었습니다.

Personally, I think the most symbolic stages of Rock in Japan were CNBLUE and Perfume's performances. Certainly, the 13-year consecutive appearance by Polysics, the unexpected casting of the renowned Anzen Chitai, and Bump of Chicken who returned after 5 years were some of the many highlights, but the reason I picked these two is because they seemed to have revealed the contrast in perspectives toward "rock" between Korea and Japan in the most representative way.

Unlike "Summer sonic" or "Fuji Rock Festival" in which foreign bands appear, this is an inaccessible stage that did not allow any overseas artists' inclusion with the exception of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in 2001, who visited as a "guest". To add, the host of the festival, "Rockin' On", is an organization known for fiercely promoting musicians with potentials in all fronts, regardless of the criticism they receive for creating exclusive walls.

Meaning, the fact that they allowed CNBLUE to perform at the Lake Stage which fills about 10,000 audience by itself denotes their complete recognition into Japanese rock scene. In Korea, they have been branded as an "imitation band" after several unfavorable incidents, so while I was watching their performance with the thought "They brought this upon themselves," I could not help but feel regrettable. Their vocals and instrumental performances were in no way limited in carrying out the 4-50 minute long show; they had just as much star power and mass appeal as any other band. But they were not invited to any of the numerous Korean festivals and instead could only perform in Japan. Certainly, we cannot free them of what they did in Korea, but Koreans do not recognize them as a rock band for their origins while Japanese people ask "Why aren't they a rock band when they write, play, and sing their own songs?" I wondered whether the difference of this perspective is one of the reasons that brought about the contrast between the two countries' music scenes. If there was an open perspective toward the genre of "rock," along with the agency's correct response and care for the indie scene, wouldn't it have been possible for CNBLUE to appear in Korean rock festivals? If you ask me, who wishes for more mass appeal and diversity, my heart was caught between excitement and much regret.
