My name is 정용화 鄭容和. ‘얼굴이 화목하다’ 는 뜻으로 철학관에서 지어준 이름이다.
1989년 6월 22일 서울 역삼동에서 태어났다. 두 살 때 부산으로 이사를 가서 고등학교 졸업할 때까지 살았으니까 그냥 부산 사람이라고 생각한다.
부모님과 네 살 위의 형이 있다. 우리 가족은 모두 다 소심한 A형이다.
강신우처럼 서울에 올라온 뒤로 부산 사투리를 고치려는 노력을 열심히 했다. 그랬더니 드라마 첫 방송을 본 부산 친구들이 전화해서 첫 마디가 “어? 용화, 표준말 쓰네?”였다. 하하.
미남이에게 “이리 와서 앉아. 따뜻한 차가 있어” 라고 말하는 신으로 <미남이시네요> 오디션을 봤다. 솔직히 연기를 잘 하지는 못했는데 기타를 칠 줄 알고 원래 밴드를 했다는 것 때문에 감독님이 좋게 봐주시지 않았나 싶다. 감독님께 일본 싱글 앨범 타이틀곡 ‘Now or Never’를 기타 치면서 불러드리기도 했다.
내가 연기를 처음 하니까 홍자매 작가님들도 불안하셨는지 따로 불러서 캐릭터에 대한 설명을 해 주셨다. 강신우가 너무 느끼해 보이거나 ‘손발이 오그라드는’ 걸 원하지 않으셔서 어떻게 하면 자연스럽게 표현할 수 있는지 생각해보라는 숙제도 내 주셨다. 그래서 열심히 해 봤지만 역시 조금은 오그라들었던 것 같다.
미남이를 안으면서 “제 여잡니다!”라고 외칠 때가 사실 되게 오그라드는 신이었지만 난 오히려 시원했다. 대본을 받을 때마다 언제쯤 고백하는지만 기다렸기 때문에 그 때는 드디어 고백한다는 생각이 들어서 통쾌했던 것 같다.
‘고미남’ 신혜는 빠른 90이라 동갑 친구가 됐는데 같이 연기하는 신이 많아서 정말 도움을 크게 받았다. 그런데 극 중에서 항상 남장을 하고 있으니까 어느 순간부터 신혜가 여자처럼 하고 있으면 “어? 오늘은 여자처럼 입었네?”라고 말하게 되더라.
‘황태경’ 근석이 형에 대해 촬영 전까진 걱정이 많았다. 무서울까봐. 하하. 근데 전혀 그렇지 않고, 맏형답게 동생들을 풀어줄 땐 풀어주고 잡을 땐 확실히 잡아주는 면이 늘 고마웠다.
‘제르미’ 홍기와는 같은 회사라서 원래 친한 편이었다. 얼마 전 공항에서 홍기가 내 무릎을 베고 누워 자는 사진이 올라왔던데 그거야, 친하고 피곤해 하니까. 또 기다리는 시간이 꽤 있었기 때문에.
데뷔 전 인터넷에 돌아다녔던 ‘스키장 훈남’ 사진은, 가족들, 친구들이랑 같이 스키장에 갔을 때 찍었던 건데 그런 것까지 알려질 줄은 몰랐지만 그래도 잘 나온 사진이라 다행이다.
최근 인터넷을 강타한 ‘깨방정 정용화’ 동영상은 고2 때 제주도 수학여행 가는 버스 안에서 친구가 휴대폰으로 찍은 거다. 영상에서는 내가 “찍지 마라~” 그러는데, 사실 그러면서도 찍어달라고 하는 상황을 설정하고 장난친 거다. 사람들이 나를 강신우라는 캐릭터로만 보는 것보다 정용화의 실제 모습을 알 수 있다는 점에서 괜찮은 것 같다.
촬영을 앞둔 <일밤>의 ‘헌터스’는 멧돼지를 잡으러 간다기보다는 요즘 멧돼지로 인한 농민들의 피해가 심하다는 얘기를 뉴스에서 들었는데 실제로는 어떨지 현장에서 직접 보고 싶다. 굉장히 힘들 것도 각오하고 있다.
우리 밴드의 C.N.BLUE라는 이름은 코드네임 블루, 암호명 블루라는 뜻이다. 사무실 사람들끼리 거금을 걸고 공모한 끝에 나온 이름이다. 아시아 최고가 되어보자, 그리고 많이 줄어든 한국 밴드 시장을 한번 바꿔보자는 게 C.N.BLUE의 목표다.
밴드에서는 내가 제일 맏형이다. 나랑 같이 보컬과 기타를 맡은 종현이는 남자다우면서도 순진한 면이 있는 친구고, 막내인 드럼의 민혁이는 얼굴도 애기 같은데 성격이 깔끔해서 청소도 잘 한다. 아, 우리가 청소를 시키는 건 아니다. (웃음) 새로 들어온 베이스의 정신이도 민혁이랑 동갑인데 멤버들을 잘 챙긴다. 무엇보다 다들 음악을 정말 좋아하는 친구들이다.
멤버들이 드라마를 항상 챙겨보면서 격려해줬다. 이번에 일본에 갔더니 수고했다고 짐도 들어주려고 하고. 하하. 사실 난 기타와 이펙터 정도만 있어서 괜찮지만 드럼 같은 경우 정말 짐이 많은데도 불구하고 날 도와주려고 하니까 감동이었다.
음악은 편식하지 않는다. 밴드 같은 경우는 본 조비 같은 시원한 스타일의 음악, 플라시보나 더 콜링의 목소리를 좋아하고 R&B나 힙합에도 관심이 많다. 그래서 랩도 종종 따라해 본다. 춤? 춤은...사실 잘 추고 싶은데 좀 어렵다. 가장 어려운 것 같다.

My Name ... Jung Yong-hwa
My name is Jung Yong-hwa. I had it made for me at one of the places where they read your fate. It means that the face looks friendly.
I was born on June 22, 1989 in the Yeoksam district of Seoul. But I consider myself from Busan because I moved there when I was two and lived there till I graduated from high school.
My family is composed of my parents and a brother older than me by four years. Every member of my family is of the so-called timid A blood type.
After coming to Seoul, I put in a lot of effort to fix my Busan dialect. My friends back in Busan who saw the first episode of my drama called me and said that I use standard Korean now. Haha.
The scene where I say, "Come sit here. I've made some warm tea," is what I acted in auditioning for my part in "Minamishineyo". My acting isn't good but I think the director gave me good marks for the fact that I know how to play the guitar and am part of a band. During the audition, I also sang our song "Now or Never" from our group's Japanese single.
Since it was my first time acting I think the writers were also quite worried so they called me to the side separately and explained my character to me. They also asked me to think about how to express Kang Shin-woo's character without making him seem too cheesy. I tried my best but I think I still ended up expressing him a bit over the top.
With Park Shin-hye who played Go Mi-nam, I've become friends with her but I got a lot of help because there were a lot of scenes we were in together. She was always dressed as a guy in the drama though so at one point, I would be a bit surprised when she would dress as the female she is.
Regarding Jang Keun-suk who played Hwang Tae-kyung, I was initially very worried because I thought he would be scary. Haha. But he wasn't at all, and I'm very thankful that he acted like the eldest that he is, letting us enjoy ourselves when we should but also taking charge at the right times.
Lee Hong-ki, who played Jeremy in the drama is managed by the same agency as mine so we had been pretty good friends even before we went into shoot. A photograph of him sleeping while lying on my legs at the airport was posted on the website but that's because we're that close and he was tired. We also had to wait for quite a while.
A video of me acting all giddy was posted on the Internet recently. A friend of mine took that video on his cellphone while we were in the bus to go on a trip to Jeju island as juniors in high school. I say, "Stop shooting me" but I was just playing around - I had asked him to shoot the video. I think it's good in that people will see the real me rather than as my character Kang Shin-woo.
My band's name C. N. BLUE stands for Code Name Blue. Our agency put up prize money for the person who comes up with the best name. Our band's goal is to become the best in Asia and to hopefully bring changes to the Korean music industry which has been see less bands.
In the band, I'm the oldest. Jong-hyun, who along with me is a vocal and plays the guitar, is manly but has an naive side to him, our youngest member and drummer Min-hyuk looks like a baby but he's good at cleaning up. Oh, we never make him clean up though. (laugh) Our new bassist Jung-shin is the same age as Min-hyuk but he's good at taking care of the band. And more than anything, everyone really likes music.
My band members showed their support for my acting by watching every episode of "Minamishineyo". They even carried my bags for me when I returned from shooting an episode in Japan. Haha.
I don't favor one music genre over another. In the case of bands, I like Bon Jovi's brisk style of singing and the voices of Placebo and The Calling. I'm also very interested in R & B and hip-hop. That's why I sometimes try following rap. Dancing? I want to be good at it but it's difficult. I think it's the most difficult.
