내가 아는 한 여자들은 정용화를 좋아한다.
어른이 좋아할 매너와 옷차림, 이성을 자극하는 노래 실력에 누구나 인정할 만큼 잘난 외모까지….
그래서 우리는 정용화가 노래를 하든 연기를 하든 끊임없이 경계해왔다.
특히 여자친구 앞에서는
입 밖에도 꺼내지 않았다.
누구나 정용화가 될 수는 없다.
정용화를 다시 보게 된 것은 몇 달 전 그가 출연한 [라디오스타]의 영향이 컸다. 정용화가 리더로 있는 씨엔블루의 멤버 모두가 출연했는데 한마디로 그는 시종일관 디스를 당했다. 데뷔 초만 해도 드라마 [미남이시네요]를 통해 인지도와 인기를 쌓은 정용화가 씨엔블루를 이끌어갔는데 요즘은 나머지 멤버들도 노래뿐 아니라 연기에서도 인정을 받으니 정용화의 '몫'이 줄어들지 않았냐는 것. 거기에 정용화가 나온 최근 드라마들이 연달아 묻혔다는 이야기까지 곁들여 [라디오스타] 다운 집요한 공격이 이어졌다. 이에 속마음이야 어땠을지 몰라도 정용화의 태도는 의외로 호탕했다. "모두가 잘되니 좋다"는 도덕적인 이야기에 "그래도 난 다르다"는 식의 요즘 젊은이다운 패기를 얹어 제대로 응수했다.
정용화는 약간의 부상을 입은 채 스튜디오로 왔다. 요즘 그는 한창 tvN의 시즌제 일요드라마 [삼총사] 촬영에 여념 없다. [삼총사]는 우리가 한 번쯤은 접했던 19세기 프랑스의 작가 알렉상드르 뒤마의 소설 [삼총사]를 모티프로 한다. 조선 인조 시대를 배경으로 강원도 무인이자 가난한 집안의 양반 출신으로 한양에 올라와 무과에 도전하는 '박달향'이 삼총사인 '소현세자'와 그의 호위무사 '허승포', '안민서'를 만나, 조선과 중국을 오가며 광활하게 펼처지는 호쾌한 액션 로맨스 활극이다. 그는 여기서 원작의 달타냥 격인 '박달향'을 연기한다. 말 그대로 주인공이다.
"어제 말 타는 촬영을 하다가 아주 살짝 타박상을 입었죠."
절뚝거린다. 박달향을 연기하기 위해 머리도 기르고, 검게 탄 피부에 지방을 빠짝 빼고 근육만 남겼다. 이제 제법 남자 티가 난다. [삼총사]는 막 세번째 촬영이란다.
"사극은 처음인데 재미있어요. 예능 중에도 제가 [런닝맨]을 좋아하는데 뭔가 움직임이 있고 액션이 있으니 더 좋은 것 같아요. 몸은 힘들지 않아요. 말에서 떨어지고 좀 다쳐도 기분이 나쁘지가 않아요."
드라마 [삼총사]는 정용화가 오랜만에 선택한 남자 위주의 작품이다. 전작들--[미래의 선택], [넌 내게 반했어] 등 -- 이 로맨스 위주였다면 이 작품은 그가 출연해서 호응을 받았던 예능 프로그램인 [런닝맨]등과 맥락을 같이한다.
"최근 티저영상을 찍었는데요. 삼총사와 제가 단체로 카메라 앞에 서는 것이 처음이었죠. 네 명이서 걸어오는 장면을 찍고 모니터하는데 괜히 막 감정 이입이 되더라고요. 나중에 잘되고 흩어지고 이럴 생각을 하니까 벌써부터 찡하기도 하고요."
박달향답다.
"달타냥 캐릭터가 영국 드라마에서는 좀 무겁고, 영화 [삼총사]에서는 좀 밝았다면, 이번 드라마에서는 록 스타 같아요. 자존심 구기는 것 싫어하고 어른스럽기도 하지만 철이 안 든 구석도 있죠. 시골에서 늘 1등 하던 아이가 서울에 와서도 자신감은 넘치죠. 그리고 삼총사를 만나서 업그레이드되는 거죠. 저도 어떻게 성장할까 기대가 돼요."
순수한 객기는 남자 시청자들에게도 충분히 어필할 수 있는 정서다. 어릴 때부터 흠모하던 여자를 짝사랑하는 로맨스도 물론 있다. 한마디로 대중의 사랑을 받기 충분한 종합 선물 세트 같은 캐릭터다.
"맞아요. 게다가 시즌제니까 미국 드라마 느낌도 나고요. 그런데 이제는 시청률에 대한 욕심은 버렸어요. 솔직히 지금까지 한 작품 중에서 이렇게 촬영 전부터 온 신경을 쏟아부어서 하는 것은 처음이에요. 제가 어릴 때부터 [삼총사] 드라마 스토리를 정말 좋아했어요. 저희 [삼총사] 드라마 팀 단체 카톡방이 있는데요. 시즌3까지 다치지 말고 함께 해나가자, 이런 다짐을 합니다."
이진욱, 양동근에 신예 정해인이 삼총사를 각각 맡는다. 정용화가 가장 막내다. 반면 자신의 그룹 씨엔블루에서는 리더 역할을 묵묵히 수행중이다.
"이제 다른 멤버들도 각자 말할 수 있는 위치가 되었죠. 그러니까 저는 이때까지 짐을 많이 들었다고 생각했는데 좀 편해진 것 같아요. 대신 그 친구들보다는 뭐든 좀 더 잘해야겠다, 동생들이 인정할 만한 사람이 되어야겠다, 이런 생각을 하죠."
스물여섯, 정용화란 브랜드에 대한 고민이 서서히 시작된 모양이다.
"어떻게 보면 연예인치고 제가 우여곡절이 없어 보이잖아요. 그런데 나름대로 돌이켜보면…. 데뷔 초에 큰 사랑을 받아서 작년까지만 해도 이걸 잃어버리지 않으려고 집착 같은 걸 했어요. 그런데 올해 되면서 뭔가 좀 촉박함을 버리고 나니 편해졌다고나 할까요? 스트레스를 덜 받으니 재미가 생기기 시작했어요. 아이돌 느낌도 조금씩 벗어난 것 같고 음악 할 때는 음악하고 연기할 때는 연기하고 그렇게요."
달타냥이 된 정용화의 팬들이 붙인 또 다른 별명은 홍길동을 접목한 '용길동'이다. 동에 번쩍, 서에 번쩍, 그만큼 바쁘다는 것이다.
"데뷔한 지 5년 정도 됐는데요. 진짜 쉴 틈 없이 달려온 것 같아요. 어느 날은 이걸 다 해내는 걸 보면서 '사람의 한계란 참 대단할 만큼 넓구나'하고도 느끼죠. 그러면서 막상 바쁜 게 사라지면 어색할 것 같은 느낌이랄까요. 내년에는 좀 여행도 가보고 그럴까 해요. 예전에는 갈수도 있는데 이상하게 선뜻 용기가 안 나더라고요."
내로라하는 한류 스타 중 한 명인 정용화의 소박함은 끝까지 이어졌다.
"전 뭐 중국에서 신인상 타고 이런 것도 기분좋은데요. 어머니 친구 딸이 사인해달라고 할 때? 이런 것이 가장 기쁜 것 같아요. 친구가 '내 친구가 정용화다' 이런 게 자랑이 된다면 그게 제일 좋은 것 같아요."
정용화는 시종일관 부산말로 인터뷰를 했다. 그리고는 이렇게 읊조렸다.
"그저 정용화 같다, 이랬으면 좋겠어요. 쟨 진짜 잘난 놈이구나. 못 가진게 뭐야? 이런 생각이 들 정도로 모든 면에서…. 그저 정용화답다…."
정용화의 나이테가 그가 만든 복근의 王자처럼 빽빽한 힘 같은 것이 느껴졌다.

I love how his biggest happiness is knowing that he made his family or friends proud. This shows how he cares more for others than for himself.

True about the impact of the Radio Star. I was nervous when I heard about their appearance on the show that is known for its ruthlessness. And ruthless it was! Yet he emerged from the show a clear and undisputed winner. I guess he impressed many that day. He is different.

Just by reading this interview I know he's more relaxed now and has let go some pressure he used to put on himself, I'm relieved. He sounded calm and composed. And yes, he's 26 and they can't be always rejecting those offers that came only for him when his peers in the entertainment business are pursuing and competing for the very same opportunity.
Glad to heart that even at the early stage of filming the cast and crew of TTM have seem to get close to each other. ^^ -

I didn't cry reading the interview. I was just very angry because I thought of the bullsh*t people ("fans" included) said about his "status" in the group.
Not just any ambitious person can be successful. Jung Yong Hwa is different. -
이전 작품은 뭔가 스스로를 위한 결정이라기보다는 소속사의 판단이나 소속사를 위한 의사결정이었다는 느낌이 강했다면, 이번 삼총사라는 작품은 정용화씨 스스로를 위한 결정이었다는 느낌이 이 인터뷰를 보고 확실히 드네요. 그래서 좀 더 응원해주고 싶구요 (음모론 싫어하는데, 소속사의 의사결정이 아니라 본인이 원하는 작품을 선택해서 이렇게 하드하게 스케줄을 소화해야 하나하는 생각도 들고..스케줄은 정말 안타깝네요) 정말 윗분들도 말씀하셨지만 짧지만 예년과는 조금은 달라진, 조금은 팀을 위한 책임감보다는 자신을 생각하게 되는 여유를 갖게 된 것도 다행인듯 하구요...하여간 무조건 화이팅입니다.

Indeed, this kind of interviews are the best -- where we can find out how yonghwa truly feels. He has never failed to make me proud. Though he has received an onslaught of criticisms during radio star, i was happy he handled the situation calmly and emerged as the winner ^^ Inarguably, yonghwa IS different, and not everyone can be jung yong hwa. -
