“노래나 기타 연습은 충분히 했기 때문에 떨리지 않았어요. 그런데 ‘엠카’ 첫 방송 때 인이어 때문에 고생을 좀 했어요. 정용화 선배님이 인이어를 한 쪽만 하는 게 관객 반응이나 사운드를 다 들을 수 있어 좋다고 하셨는데 저한테는 그게 맞지 않았던 거죠. 그래서 ‘바보’를 부를때는 박자를 따라가느라 표정이 많이 굳었던 것 같아요. 그런데 인이어를 다 빼고 ‘일라 일라’를 부를 때는 정말 편했어요. 그 뒤로는 항상 양쪽 다 해요”
대신 주니엘의 행보에는 9명의 든든한 남자들이 함께한다. 한솥밥 식구인 FT아일랜드와 씨엔블루가 그 주인공. 특히 씨엔블루의 정용화는 주니엘의 데뷔 앨범에 자작곡을 선물하는 등 남다른 지원을 펼쳐 눈길을 끌었다. 또 그는 주니엘과 함께 각종 음악프로그램에 함께 출연하며 선배이자 멘토 역할을 톡톡히 수행했다.
“확실히 정용화 선배님과 함께 다니다 보니 부담감이 줄어든 것 같아요. 저를 데리고 돌아다니시면서 작가나 PD분들에게 인사도 시켜주시고 CD에는 어떤 말을 써서 전해드려야 할지도 알려주시거든요. 다른 선배님들도 만날 때마다 잘 챙겨주세요. 사실 씨엔블루 선배님들과는 같은 날 계약서에 도장을 찍은 동기라(주니엘이 2시간 일찍 찍었다) 워낙 친구처럼 편하게 지내는 것도 있고요”
정용화의 지원사격이 가수로서 첫 발을 내딛은 주니엘의 부담만 없애 준 것은 아니었다. 그는 주니엘의 앨범에 프로듀서로 참여하며 하나부터 열까지 많은 도움을 줬다.
“정용화 선배님은 녹음에 들어가면 좀 깐깐해져요. 다정한 말투로 ‘응~준희 잘했어. 그런데 다시 한 번 가자’를 100번씩 하시거든요. 좀 더 좋은 느낌을 뽑아내려고 그런 것 같아요. 원래도 누군가에게 무섭게 하는 스타일이 아니고 정말 다정하세요. 그래서인지 다른 선배님들도 정용화 선배님이 뭐 하자고 하면 한 명도 불만 없이 따라가는 편이에요”
"I practiced singing and playing the guitar plenty of times, I wasn't nervous about that. But at the first recording of M!Countdown, the in-ear piece caused me some troubles. Jung Yong Hwa sunbaenim advised me that it's better to just have one piece in, to hear all the sounds like the audience response, but it didn't suit me. That's why my face was stiff when I sang "Fool", because I was just catching up with the beats. But it was really comfortable when I took both out and sang 'Illa Illa'. From then on, I always wear both."
9 sturdy men accompany Juniel's steps. They're FTIsland and CNBLUE of the same agency. Especially, CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa is going all-out by presenting her debut album with his own composition. He's also guest appearing in numerous music shows, faithfully fulfilling his role as a sunbae and a mentor.
"Certainly, going to places with Jung Yong Hwa sunbaenim really made it easier for me. He takes me around to say hello to writers and producers, and he even lets me know what kind of things to write on my CD when I give them out. He always takes care of me whenever I meet other sunbaes. I'm actually really close with CNBLUE sunbaes because we signed our contract on the same day (Juniel was 2 hours early)."
Jung Yong Hwa's support not only eased her burden as a rookie singer. He participated in her album as a producer, helping her from 1 to 10.
"Jung Yong Hwa sunbaenim turns a bit picky when we start recording. In his nice voice, he'd say "Yes Jun Hee, great job. But let's go again." about 100 times. I think he's trying to get a better tone. To begin with, he's not tough on anyone. He's really kind. Perhaps that's why, other sunbaes all follow without complaint when Jung Yong Hwa sunbaenim says so."
