CNBLUE라고 하면, 트윈편성의 보컬&기타.

그것을 맡고 있는 게 용화와 종현 투탑.

그 독특한 스타일을 멤버 자신들의 시선으로 해설하자면…

용화와 종현은 “장미”와 “라벤더”?

- 트윈 보컬팀인 두사람은, 서로에 대해 어떤 인상을 갖고 있나요?

용화 : 종현이는 목소리가 예뻐서, 발라드계열의 곡이 잘 어울려요.

종현 : 달콤한 목소리죠(웃음)

용화 : 라벤더? 라벤더같은 달콤한 목소리입니다(웃음)

종현 : 그건 오버다!(웃음)

- (웃음) 종현군이 라벤더라면 용화군은?

종현 : 제가 라벤더라면 형은… 장미? 로즈?

용화 : 하하하하! 로즈 보컬?(웃음)

종현 : (웃음) 목소리가 그렇긴 한데, 단지 예쁘기만 한 것이 아닌 파워를 느낄 수 있죠.

예쁘기만 한게 아니라 “가시”가 있다!.

그리고 정신이는 튤립.(웃음)

정신 : 머리스타일이.(웃음)

종현 : (웃음) 머리를 세우면 해바라기처럼 됩니다.

- (웃음) 목소리 타입이 다른 보컬이 두 명 있으니 곡에 변화도 줄 수 있는거죠.

종현 : 그렇죠. 형은 [Time is over]나 [Come on]같은 리듬계열의 곡, “강한” 타입의 곡이 잘 어울린다는게 저와 다른 점이죠.

격렬함과는 또 조금 다른데, 섬세하고, 파워풀한 보컬이잖아요.

이렇게 전혀 다른 타입의 보컬리스트가 존재한다는 게 CNBLUE의 장점이라고 생각합니다.

- 서로 타입이 다른 보컬리스트, 혹은 기타리스트로서, 앞으로 도전해보고 싶은 것도 각자 다른가요?

용화 : 전 기타뿐만 아니라, 다른 악기도 도전해 보고 싶어요.

여러가지의 악기를 갖고 있어요.

신디사이저, 보이스이펙트, DJ셋트… 방의 대부분을 악기가 점령하고 있죠(웃음)

아직 다 사용하진 못하고 있어요. 작곡할 때밖에 사용하질 않아서.

종현 : 악기를 여러가지 사용할 수 있었으면 좋겠다 하는 생각은 저도 갖고 있어요.

언젠가 라이브에서 다른 악기로 연주해 보고 싶어요,

- 파트체인지해서 라이브를? 그거 재미있겠는데요! 어떤 악기를 하실거에요?

종현 : 전 베이스요!

용화 : 그럼 제가 드럼. 민혁이한테 배웠어요.

손과 발의 움직임을 따로 생각하지 않으면 안되니까 어렵긴한데 드럼도 재미있어요.

민혁 : 형은 기본이 잘 되어 있거든요.

그럼 전 기타와 피아노.

용화 : 플룻아냐?(웃음)

정신 : 그럼, 제가 보컬?(웃음)

바이올린도 좋구요. 어렸을 때 약간 배운 적이 있거든요.

- 보컬리스트가 두 명 존재한다는 것 뿐만 아니라, 다른 악기를 연주할 수 있는 연주자도.

용화 : 그럼 저는 드럼을 치면서 DJ를(오른손으로 턴테이블을 돌리고, 왼손으로 드럼을 치는 척)…

그건 아마 힘들겠죠(웃음).

여러가지 악기에 대해서 알고 있으면, CNBLUE의 노래 폭이 넓어질테니 좋은 것 같아요.

 

밴드의 토대를 지탱해주는 베이스&드럼. 동갑내기 두사람이 자아내는 리듬에 대해서

CNBLUE의 리듬파트&막내콤비, 민혁&정신.

곡의 토대를 베이스와 드럼으로 지탱하는 그들 사이에는 굳이 말하지 않아도 생각하는 바가 전해지는 “찰떡 호흡”이 존재하는 듯 하다.

- 리듬파트인 두 사람은 서로의 존재를 어떻게 인식하고 있나요?

정신 : 민혁이는 우선 정확한 드러머죠.

종현 : 응. 항상 냉정하고, 언제나 자신에게 엄격하고.

민혁 : 아니… (수줍은 웃음) 정신이는 같은 리듬파트로서 여러가지를 가르쳐줘요.

라이브할 때, 연주중에 뭔가를 느끼면, 시선으로 그걸 전해준다거나.

- 둘이서 아이컨텍으로 무언가를 주고받는거군요.

정신 : 네. 연습할 때도 종종 시선을 교환하고, 연주중에 곡의 섹션이 바뀔때도 신호를 보낸다거나 해요.

민혁 : 그럴 때가 많아서 위치가… 드럼셋트의 사각지대에서는 정신이가 안보이는 경우도 있어서 기타와 위치를 바꿔준다면 더 기쁠 것 같아요(웃음)

종현 : 그래서 민혁이는 날 그다지 봐주지 않는거군(웃음)

민혁 : 그렇지 않아요!(웃음)

용화 : (웃음) 하지만 연주중에 멤버들을 보면 재미있어요. 가령 민혁이는 라이브할 때의 표정으로 그 때의 상황이 파악되거든요.

종현 : 무슨 말인지 알어!(웃음) 얼마전 이벤트때에도 그랬어. “아아아~!” 이렇게.

용화 : (웃음)[kimio] 엔딩에서 다같이 맞춰서 계속해서 소리를 내는 연출이 있었는데, 드럼을 격렬하게 치면서 죽을 것 같은 얼굴이 되어서는(웃음).

그리고 민혁이가 [1,2,3!]하고 카운트를 하는데, “내 목소리를 들어줘!”하고, 어린애들이 필사적으로 애원하는 것 같았어요(웃음)

민혁 : 항상 필사적이에요(웃음). 제가 틀려버리면 연주 전체가 엉망이 되니까요.

- 그럼, 라이브에서 멤버들의 표정을 잘 보고 있으면, 그 때의 상황이 전해져올지도 모르겠군요(웃음)

종현 : 그럴거에요(웃음). 리듬파트 두 사람은 표정으로 여러가지를 알 수 있어요.

만들어온 곡을 들려주고는 “어때?”하고 반응을 보면…

정신 : (무뚝뚝하고 떨떠름한 표정)

종현 : 이건 별로였을 때의 얼굴(웃음)

정신 : (웃음) 그리고 좋을 때는 “(만면에 미소 지으며)이거 좋아요!” 하죠.

용화 : 요즘에는 그닥 좋은 표정을 지어보여주지 않아요(웃음).

귀가 높아져서 판정이 엄격해졌어요.

- 그렇군요. 그렇게 높은 허들을 넘은 곡이 정식으로 CD에 담기는 거군요.

종현 : 네. 저희 곡은 제일 처음 심사위원이 멤버들이라, 우선은 그 허들을 열심히 넘어야 하죠.

정신 : 형들이 작곡에 힘쓰고 있는만큼, 베이스도 좀더 노력할거에요!

저 자신은 연주자로서 아직 멀었거든요.

민혁 : 저두요. 여러 악기에도 도전해보고 싶지만 자신의 본분인 드럼 실력을 좀더 높여서, 밴드의 토대를 단단히 지탱해나가고 싶습니다.

The distinct style, in the members’ own words…

Yong Hwa and Jong Hyun are “Rose” and “Lavender”?

-You’re a team of twin vocals. What impressions do you have of one another?

YH: JH has a pretty voice, which suits songs of the ballad genre.

JH: It’s a sweet voice (laughs).

YH: Lavender? It’s a sweet voice like a lavender (laughs).

JH: That’s a stretch! (laughs)

-(Laughs) If JH is a lavender, what about YH?

JH: If I’m a lavender, hyung is…a rose?

YH: Hahahaha! A rose vocalist? (laughs)

JH: (Laughs) His voice is like that. Not only beautiful, but also powerful. Not just pretty, but has “thorns”! And JS is a tulip (laughs)

JS: The hair style (laughs).

JH: (Laughs) When spiked up, like a sunflower.

-(Laughs) Since you have two vocalists that have different voices, you can have variations in your music.

JH: Yes. Hyung is different from me in that his voice suits rhythmical songs like “Time is over” and “Come on”, those that have “strong” sounds. It’s a little different from being just tough, it’s sensitive yet powerful. I think it’s CNBLUE’s strength that we have such contrasting vocalists in one band.

-As vocalists and guitarists that have distinctive characteristics, are your future goals also different?

YH: I want to try instruments other than the guitar. I have many different kinds of instruments, such as synthesizer, voice effector, and a DJ set…they take up most of the space in my room (laughs). I haven’t had a chance to use them fully, because I only play them when I compose.

JH: I also have the desire to play many different instruments. Someday, I want to try performing with a different instrument.

-Changing your parts at a live performance? That sounds fun! Which instrument do you want to play?

JH: The bass for me!

YH: Then I’ll take the drums. I learned from MH. It’s difficult because you need to coordinate the movements of your hands and feet, but it’s still interesting.

MH: Hyung has the basics down. Then I’ll take the guitar and the piano.

YH: Not the flute? (laughs)

JS: In that case, I’ll be the vocal? (laughs) I like the violin too. I learned it for a while when I was little.

-Not only two vocalists, but instrumentalists who can play different instruments!

YH: Then I’ll DJ while playing the drums (Acts like managing the turntable with his right hand and the drums with his left)…I guess that’s impossible (laughs). If we learn about more instruments, it’d be great for broadening the range of CNBLUE’s music.

On the rhythms that the same-aged friends produce together

CNBLUE’s rhythm parts & maknae pair, MH & JS.

Between the two of them who support the foundation of their music with the bass and the drums, there seems to be a connection that renders words unnecessary.

-You two are in charge of the rhythm parts. What are you impressions of each other?

JS: MH is, more than anything, an accurate drummer.

JH: Right, always cool-headed and strict on himself.

MH: Naw…(shy smiles) I learn a lot from JS as rhythm parts together. During lives, if he senses something (wrong), he’d let me know with a glance.

-I see, the two of you exchange messages by eye contact.

JS: Yeah. During practices, we’d often exchange eye contact. We also signal one another when the sections of the song changes in the middle of the performance.

MH: That happens often, so the position is…Sometimes, there are blind spots from the drum set so I can’t see JS. I’d be happier if the guitar could change the position with him (laughs).

JH: That’s why MH doesn’t really look at me (laughs).

MH: That’s not it! (laughs)

YH: (Laughs) Anyways, it’s fun to watch the members during performances. For instance, I can figure out the situation through MH’s facial expression during lives.

JH: I know what that means! (Laughs) That happened at the past event. He was like, “Ahhh~!”

YH: (Laughs) At the end of “kimio”, it was arranged so that we keep playing a phrase together over and over. While drumming fiercely, his face looked like he was about to die (laughs). His counting “1,2,3!”, sounded like a child pleading desperately.

MH: I’m always desperate (laughs). Because if I mess up, the entire performance is messed up.

-So we may get a sense of the situation by carefully watching your faces at the live shows?

JH: Probably (laughs). The two rhythm parts tell much with their faces. When I write a song and ask, “How does it sound?” their responses are…

JS: (cold, emotionless expression)

JH: This is the face he makes when it’s bad (laughs).

JS: (Laughs) When it’s good, I say “(Big smiles) I like it!”

YH: He doesn’t show the good face so much these days (laughs). His standards are high now, so the verdict is stricter.

-I see. So the songs that passed those hurdles officially make it to the CD.

JH: Yes. The first judges to our songs are the members, so we need to jump over those hurdles the best we can.

JS: As the hyungs put effort into composing, I’ll try harder on my bass! I’ve got much to go as an instrumentalist.

MH: Same with me. Although I want to try different instruments, I want to improve my skills in playing the drums, so that I continue to firmly support the foundation of our band.
