“CODE NAME BLUE” CNBLUE

CODE NAME BLUE].

keep changing BLUE

CODE NAME BLUE].

[Time is over]는 특히나 개인적으로도 도전이었어요.

용화 : ♪hey you don’t know me…

용화 : [Time is over]는 [In My Head]와 비교하면 락 느낌이라기 보다는 그루브감이 느껴지는 곡이에요.

예를 들면 [Have a good night]는, 라이브 풍경이 눈에 선한 스토리인듯도 한데.

게다가 “Acoustic, Electric Guitars”, “bass and drum”, 팬 여러분들의 “great cheers”.

용화 : ([Wake up] 멜로디에 맞춰서 라이브로) ♪you can’t be Eric Clapton, John Mayer~

Mr.Big?

용화 : [Time is over]는 얼마전 휴가차 부산에 갔을 때 가사를 썼었어요.

“Code Name Blue” CNBLUE

First Japanese Major album released on Aug. 29, “Code Name Blue”.

The work holds 14 tracks (including bonus track in first press), full of CNBLUE’s love, heart of joy, and challenges for music.

With such an ambitious release, they reappeared on the cover in one year!

Keep Changing BLUE

Showing Diverse Colors in First Japanese Major Album

First Japanese Major Album, “Code Name Blue”.

We deliver you the voice of four members about their self-titled album!

If you read as you listen to the new release, there may be loads of new findings!

Also more on the much anticipated, upcoming tour!

About a year after their last indie album, “392″, CNBLUE’s first major album, “Code Name Blue” is finally released. Through showcasing aggressive rock sounds, their pre-released single “Come on” had subverted their image thus far in a good way. While “Come on” is still fresh in our mind, the album that directly followed overflows with diversity, revealing plenty of their “alternative” aspect. For a band that continued to repeat change and evolution with an unwavering spirit of challenge, this album may as well be called the highest peak reached in their current career. Let’s hear the episodes behind the making of the album from the four.

-It’s finally finished. It seems to convey the end result of your longtime approach, which is “taking challenge in many different types of music.”

JH: Right. Including the indie days, it’s already been several years since we’ve performed in Japan. I feel very emotional. Since this is our first major album in Japan, it feels as though we’re starting back at one… Like we returned to our beginning. I think that’s a very nice feeling. The song included in the single, “Come on”, was our first attempt at such a hard rock. Some said, “Is this metal?” (laughs). We wanted to try a composition like this!

YH: It’s close to hard rock. I think it’s great to try different styles from what we’ve done before. There are those types of songs, but also a pop track like “Blue Sky”. Each and every track in this album is distinct; it’s similar to listening to the songs of (different) artists you like on your iPod.

-I see. Like shuffling the songs you like and listening to them regardless of their genres.

YH: Yes, exactly. The diversity of the songs might make the listeners to wonder, “What IS the style of this band?” I think that’s our “style”.

MH: Because it’s our first album after we major debuted in Japan, it feels different from releasing the singles. When we released first and second singles, it felt like taking one step forward at a time, but this album feels like we leaped at once. Musically, as well as in other aspects, we’ve progressed much.

JS: Yes. We tried many different songs. In particular, “Time is over” was a challenge for me individually. It has the fanciest bass phrase among all of CNBLUE’s songs.

JH: Duririririri~!

JS: Durururururu~!

YH: hey you don’t know me…Durururururu~ Duriduriduri~!

-I don’t think it’ll come through on text (laughs).

JS: Please transfer everything we just did into words (laughs). We thought it’d be cool for the bass to sound fancy, so we used the pentatonic scale in this track.

YH: Compared to “In My Head”, “Time is Over” has more groovy rhythms than “rock”. There’s a catchy hook, and elements of pop can also be found in the song. Although we’ve often released rock numbers in our recent singles, I wanted to try a bit different, softer song. For instance, even within rock music, I really love bands like Coldplay.

-A track that expresses such challenges, for example, is “No more”. Many fans must be focusing on the fact that it’s a co-composition between Yong Hwa and Jong Hyun. How did you complete this song?

YH: At first, “No more” was written by JH.

JH: Right. I started writing it, but felt it lacked something. I discussed with YH how to turn it into a better song. Then hyung suggested, “How’s this?”, giving me ideas.

YH: Yeah. In the beginning, there were just guitar, bass, and drums. When I heard it, I said, “Wouldn’t it work if we add synthesizer sounds?” and tried it. Right away, he responded, “Oh! This is great!” (laughs).

-I liked the synthesizer because it was a different style that you didn’t have before. Personally, it reminds me of disco in the 70′s like the sound of Earth, Wind & Fire (laughs).

YH: Oh, yes (laughs). The sound of synthesizer is old-style. Nowadays, I often listen to Boney M.

-I see, you like disco from the 70-80′s, too!

YH: Yes. Though both our genres and periods are quite different (laughs). But the sentimental melodies like those of Boney M, something that you could remember right away after hearing once, can also be found in today’s bands like Maroon 5. Like them, we love the mixed style between old, disco music and more modern style of music, so we wanted to give it a try.

JS: In fact, I feel like there’s this warmth in “No more” that can’t be found in songs these days. Just like this track, when JH hyung’s “alternative” style and YH hyung’s “disco” style are combined, it creates CNBLUE’s new music.

-The tone of “These days” also seem to be in line with the recent trend in R&B genre. I can sense everywhere that there’s no (specific) genre.

JH: This song was written when I was a trainee. The melody’s similar to R&B– I like songs of this style and genre, too.

YH: We’re a “rock band”, but as for our style, we think we’re an “alternative band”. So regardless of the tracks being rock or close to R&B, they can coexist without clashing.

JH: Right. When the album was completed and I listened to the very end, I felt, “We’re really changing.” And that’s what we were hoping when we first started music, too. I’m very happy that we’re a step closer to our goal of challenging various types of music.

YH: I like rap, R&B, rock, soul…I’m not very keen on sticking with just one style, so I’d like to try many different genres.

-In the lyrics, too, I found many interesting expressions that you didn’t write before. For instance, “Have a good night” seems like the story of your live concert.

YH: That’s correct. This song is about our feelings on a day we have a concert. I love very thick espresso, so I wrote the lyrics, “Espresso double double shots” (laughs). Then, “Acoustic, Electric guitars,” “bass and drum”, and the fans’ “great cheers.” These are all the elements that can’t be missed at our live performances.

-I see. You put everything you like in the lyrics (laughs).

YH: Yes (laughs). In “Wake up”, I included my favorite bands “Bon Jovi” and “Oasis”. If you carefully pay attention and read those little details, I think you’ll find many interesting parts.

-Then…hypothetically, if you’re free to include anything you like in the lyrics, what would you write about?

JH: I’ll be the same. I’m a big fan of both Bon Jovi and Oasis. Then, Eric Clapton?

YH: (Singing the melody of “Wake up”) you can’t be Eric Clapton, John Mayer~♪

JH: Yup (laughs). John Mayer’s awesome, too!

YH: (Toward JS) ♪ Mr. Big?

JS: Nice. I really love Mr. Big, but I want to include food, too. Coffee or ramen.

-”Ramen” in the lyrics!? (laughs)

JS: ♪ I want some Hakata ramen~ This won’t work, would it (laughs).

MH: (Laughs) It would depend on the song. As for me, it’d be Maroon 5 that we mentioned.

-Let’s discuss your live performances. You must be nervous before going onstage, no?

JH: Everyone else gets really nervous, but I’m not nervous at all (laughs). I sleep right up to 5 minutes before the show, then warm up my throat.

-(Laughs) You sleep until it’s 5 minutes to the show? Until right before the concert?

JH: Yes (laughs). Taking a nap before the concert relaxes my body. It’s like a trick.

-While JH sleeps, the three of you get increasingly nervous (laughs).

YH: MH gets the most nervous out of all of us (laughs).

JH: He gets VERY nervous (laughs).

MH: (Laughs) Yeah…(pressing on his stomach) as the countdown nears, I become quiet and my pulse begins to speed up.

JS: I get nervous, too. But when I’m more relaxed, my back starts to hurt (laughs). Perhaps as I’m liberated from the tension, my mind is loosened.

-It’s because your body’s honest.

YH: Right. But when that happens, I straighten myself up onstage. I shout out loud, “Ah~!!!!!”

JS: Be careful not to lose your voice (laughs).

-Are there any other songs that left an impression while you wrote the lyrics?

YH: I wrote the lyrics of “Time is over” when I went to Busan a while ago for a vacation. I watched the movie “The Avengers” and thought, may be we’re “heroes” of a kind. I wrote the lyrics thinking, we don’t help others with powers like the heroes of that movie, but we could be heroes in a way because we can empower many people through our music.

-So CNBLUE wants to be heroes who empower through music…The track embodies your actual wishes, then.

YH: Right. That, and I also missed live performances during the break. As in the lyrics, “Everyone waits for me now,” there must be people who are waiting for us. I wrote the song yearning for your responses.

-Now that you said it, how much are you anticipating the upcoming arena tour in the fall?

YH: It’s such an honor that we’re even able to hold the arena tour. So we’ll try even harder than thus far to show you great performances and lives.

MH: For that, I want to prepare diligently and perform without any regrets. I want to cherish every performance, so that I have no regrets on stage.

JS: We’re having concerts in Hiroshima and Shizuoka for the first time, so I’m looking forward to it. Saitama Super Arena is another venue that I’ve always been saying, “Someday, I want to perform there!”, so I’m happy we’re finally there.

JH: During the recording, we learn new skills in playing instruments or singing. But during lives…it’s sort of a life lesson? I feel that our current state is plainly revealed during concerts, such as how different we are from the year before, and how we’re progressing over the years. Thus, to keep on growing, I want to learn many things from the tour.
