용화&정신을 직격 인터뷰!
메이저 첫번째 앨범 [CODE NAME BLUE]가 8월 29일에 발매!
그들의 음악을 향한 탐구심과 경의가 이정도였던가 할 정도로 가득 채워진 이번 앨범에 대해서, 용화와 정신에게 솔직한 지금의 기분을 들어보았습니다!
CODE NAME BLUE.
본인들의 밴드명을 타이틀로 했다는 것은, 이 작품에 대한 그들의 자신감의 표현일 것이다.
싱글 [come on]에 이어서 완성한 CNBLUE의 기념비적인 일본 메이저 첫번째 앨범 [CODE NAME BLUE].
앨범 완성 직후의 여운이 채 가시지 않은 가운데, 타이틀에 담긴 생각과 표현하고 싶었던 것 등, 용화와 정신이 여러가지 에피소드를 들려주었다.
CNBLUE만이 갖고 있는 다채로운 라인업의 노래들이 매력적인 이번 앨범에 대해서, 먼저 완성한 기쁨의 목소리부터 들어본다.
다양한 “색깔”을 좀더 증폭시키고 싶었다.
- 드디어 앨범이 완성되었는데, 지금 어떤 기분인가요?
정신 : 이 앨범은 저희가 일본 메이저 데뷔를 한 이후 첫 앨범이기에, 굉장히 기뻐요!
지금껏 CD에 실리지 않았던 곡이나 새로운 곡들로 가득 채워져 있구요.
게다가 그 중에는 다양한 장르의 곡이 실려 있어서, 저마다의 노래에 담긴 감회가 새롭네요.
용화 : 그렇습니다. (초회반 보너스 트랙을 포함해서) 14곡이라는 많은 작품들이 수록되어 있는 이번 앨범은, 저희들에게 있어서도 처음이기도 하고, 그만큼 여러가지 곡들을 표현할 수 있었다는 것은 하나의 아티스트로서 굉장히 기뻐요.
- 확실히 폭넓은 장르, 다채로운 테이스트의 곡들이 전개되고 있다는 점이 인상적인데요.
베리에이션(변화, 변주)이 있는 앨범이라는 것이 이번 앨범의 테마이기도 하나요?
용화 : 그렇습니다. 지금껏 다양한 장르의 음악을 해왔는데, 이번에는 최근 음악씬에서도 화제가 되고 있는 스타일, 예를 들면 댄서블한 요소라던가, R&B 요소라던가 그러한 것들도 도입해보자하는 생각이 있었어요.
정신 : [in my head]와 [where you are]을 발매시 취재에서도, CNBLUE에게는 많은 세상, 다양한 “색깔”이 있다는 말씀을 드린 기억이 있는데요.
이번 앨범에서 그것을 좀더 증폭시켰으면 좋겠다는 생각이 있었어요.
- 그 “색깔”을 표현한 이번 노래 제작에 있어서, 종현군과 민혁군을 포함해 어떤 분위기였나요?
용화 : 이번 레코딩은 4명이 따로따로 녹음하는 경우가 많았는데요, 여기는 이렇게 하고 싶다, 여기서는 이런 걸 한번 해 보고 싶다 하는 느낌으로 저마다 자발적으로 임했어요.
정신 : 그리고, 일이 잘 안풀릴 때는 커피숍에 가서 기분전환하기도 했구요(웃음)
- 다같이요? 사이 좋으신가봐요(웃음)
정신 : 지금도 다같이 살고 있으니까요. 다같이 이야기 하면서 쉬기도 하구요. 가게에 놓여져 있는 잡지를 보면서, “이 차 멋있다!”하던가 “이 옷 괜찮네” 처럼 실없는 잡담같은 느낌이지만요.(웃음)
좋아하는 색이 “핑크” 가 아니라서 천만다행.(웃음)
- 일본 메이저 데뷔곡 [in my head]이후의 작품이 상징하고 있는 것 같은데, 보다 더 “락”적인 감각을 전면에 내세운 것 같은데요.
용화 : 확실히 그렇죠. 처음에 [in my head]를 선보였을 때에는 한국에서의 저희 이미지랑 너무 달라서, 깜짝 놀란 분들이 많으셨을거에요. 근데 그 다음에 나온 [where you are]도 “락”분위기의 곡이었고. [come on]은 그런 경향이 더 강해졌죠.
이런 곡들을 계속 만들어 와서인지, 락사운드, 어그레시브한 사운드가 더욱더 좋아졌고, 좀더 그런 곡을 만들고 싶다는 마음이 이번 이 앨범에까지 이어지면서 그렇게 표현된 것 같아요.
- 그리고, 이러한 공격적인 노래에 이어지는 것이, 방금 말씀해 주신 것처럼 다채로운 장르의 노래. 70년대 디스코 사운드가 물씬 풍기는 [no more], [These days]처럼 R&B 분위기가 감도는 발라드 등.
정말 폭넓은 장르의 곡들이 갖추어진 앨범인 것 같아요. 그런 작품에 [CODE NAME BLUE]라고 이름을 붙인 이유는? 이 단어는 밴드명의 유래와도 관계가 있는 단어인데 말이죠.
정신 : 맞아요. 저희 메이저에서의 첫 앨범이라서, 이러한 타이틀에는 이 앨범을 통해 보다 많은 사람들이 CNBLUE이 알아주셨으면 좋겠다는 마음, 즉 자기소개와 같은 의미도 포함되어 있어요.
용화 : “CODE NAME BLUE”라는 것은… 저랑 종현이가 부산출신이라 바다를 좋아하거든요. 부산에는 바다가 있어서.
그래서 제가 좋아하는 그 “BLUE”가 밴드명에 붙여졌다라고도 할 수 있어요.
정신 : “핑크”가 아니라서 다행이네요(웃음)
-(웃음) 핑크를 좋아하셨다면 CNPINK가 되었을지도 모르는건가요? 그건 이미지가 조금..(웃음)
정신 : 이미지랑 다르긴 하죠(웃음). 전 음악 활동을 하면 할수록 “CODE NAME BLUE”라는 밴드명에 그 의미가 조금씩 더 더해지는 것 같기는 해요.
예를 들면 용화형이 방금 전에 “바다가 좋다”라고 말했는데, 바다는 인간에게 많은 것을 선사해주잖아요. 그것이 즉 “CODE NAME BLUE”랄까.
CNBLUE 노래를 듣는 사람들에게 음악을 통해 추억이나 미소같이 여러가지를 선사해드리고 있다고 보는데, 거기서 서로가 많은 것을 느끼면서 키워나갔으면 좋겠다는 생각을 하고 있거든요.
-그 한 곡 한 곡, 하나 하나의 음과 단어에서 많은 생각들을 헤아려주시면 좋겠네요.
용화 : 맞아요. 그런 여러가지 면과 자연체 CNBLUE의 모습을 무리없이 그대로 보여드리고 있는 것이, 이번 앨범의 가장 큰 특징이라고 생각해요.
판매량이나 인기의 정도 같은 숫자에 얽매이지 않고, 조금은 힘을 빼고 천천히 나아가 보려했던 의미에서도, 이번 앨범은 저희들의 터닝포인트가 될거라 생각해요.
이 앨범을 통해서 공부해왔던 많은 것들을 앞으로도 소중히 해나가고 싶습니다.

민혁 : 일본 메이저 첫 앨범이라는 점에서 지금까지 발매한 작품들 배 이상으로 기대되기도 하고, 그만큼 긴장되기도 합니다.
이번 용화형과 종현이형의 곡은, 같은 CNBLUE 멤버로서 굉장히 자랑스러워요.

First Major Album Completed!
Direct Interview with Yonghwa & Jungshin!
The first major album, “Code Name Blue” is set to release on Aug. 29!
The fully-packed album surprises one–was their curiosity and respect toward music this high? Yonghwa and Jungshin reveal their honest thoughts at the moment!
CODE NAME BLUE.
Naming it after their band name must be a way to express their confidence about this work.
Completed following the single “Come on”, CNBLUE’s first, monumental major album in Japan is “CODE NAME BLUE”.
While the sentiments from finishing the album is still lingering, Yonghwa and Jungshin talked to us about many things, such as their thoughts on the title and what they wanted to express.
On the album that boasts CNBLUE’s own colorful lineup of songs, they first showed the joy of completion.
We wanted to amplify the diverse “colors”.
-The album is finally finished. How do you feel?
JS: This is the first album after we made major debut in Japan. I’m so happy! It’s full of new songs that had not been included in CDs. There are a variety of genres included in the album, so each feels very special.
YH: That’s right. (Including the bonus track in first press limited) The album includes as many as 14 songs, which is a first for us, and I’m very happy as an artist that we were able to express such variety.
-Certainly, it’s quite impressive that a wide range of genres with different tastes are explored in the album. Could you say that having different variations is the theme of the album?
YH: Yes. We’ve been doing many different genres of music, and this time we hoped to incorporate styles that are recently hot in the music scene, such as elements of danceable music or R&B.
JS: During the interviews when we released “In my head” and “Where you are”, I remember saying, there are many worlds and colors within CNBLUE. We wanted to amplify that more in this album.
-In the making of songs that express such “colors”, what was the atmosphere like? Including Jonghyun and Minhyuk?
YH: While making this album, the four of us often recorded separately. Each of us tried it independently, thinking “I want to do it like this here, I want to try something new over here.”
JS: When things didn’t work out, we went to a cafe to get refreshed. (laughs)
-All together? You must be very close to one another (laughs)
JS: Since we still live together. We would talk together and rest. It’s all silly stuff like looking at magazines and saying “This car looks cool!” or “These clothes are alright.”
-It seems that the works after your major debut single “In my head” are putting forth more elements of (hard) “rock” than before.
YH: Definitely. When we first showcased “In my head”, I think many audience would have been surprised because it’s so different from our image in Korea. The follow-up “Where you are” was another (heavier) “rock”, and it intensified even more in “Come on”. Maybe it’s because we kept making these songs, but I came to like the aggressive sound of rock even more. I think that my desire to keep making such songs continued to this album.
-On top of such aggressive sounds, there are songs of various genres. “No more” gives off the disco vibe from the 70′s, and “These days” is a ballad with an air of R&B. The album is filled with songs that encompasses such a wide range of genres. What’s the reason for naming such an album “CODE NAME BLUE”? The title is connected to your band’s name, right?
JS: Right. Because this is our first major album, the title includes our hope that more people would recognize CNBLUE, in a way, like a self-introduction.
YH: Another reason it’s “CODE NAME BLUE” is…(the fact that) Jonghyun and I like the sea, because we’re from Busan. You could say that the “BLUE” I love made its way to our band’s name.
JS: I’m glad it’s not “pink”. (laughs)
-(Laughs) If you liked pink, you could have been CNPINK? That’s a little…(laughs)
JS: It’s indeed different from our image. It seems the more we make music, more layers of meanings are being added. For example, YH hyung just said that he likes the sea, and the sea provides many things to humans. In a way, that’s “CODE NAME BLUE”. I think that CNBLUE’s music provides many things to our listeners such as memories and smile. I often think that we could share many feelings with each other and continue to foster them together.
-It’s be great if they could appreciate those thoughts in every note and every word.
YH: Right. I think the greatest characteristic of this album is that it shows such numerous aspects and the natural side of CNBLUE without distortion. I also believe that this album will be our turning point, because we tried not to get caught up with sales or other numerical measurement of popularity. This is our attempt to loosen up and take it slow, step by step. I wish to continue cherishing the many things I learned through this album.

MH: The fact that this is our first major album in Japan makes me doubly excited and nervous at the same time. As a CNBLUE’s member, I’m very proud of the songs written by Yonghwa hyung and Jonghyun hyung this time. Everyone, please take a listen!
JH: Rather than (explaining with) words, I hope you’d just give it a listen! (laughs)
