【E】신나는 댄스록, 역동적 퍼포먼스… 7000여 팬 ‘블루문’에 열광적 환호 Exciting Dance-rock, Dynamic Performance...7000 Fans Passionately Cheer for "Blue Moon"

야릇한 무대였다. 정통 밴드의 묵직함은 찾아보기 힘들었지만, 그렇다고 아이돌 밴드의 가벼움도 쉽게 읽히지 않았다. 그들은 밴드가 가질 수 있는 모든 재료를 신나고 재미있게 섞어 7000여 관객을 판타지 여행으로 안내했다.

11일 홍콩 아시아월드 엑스포 아레나에서 열린 아이돌 밴드 씨엔블루의 첫 월드투어 ‘블루문’ 무대. 잘생긴 4명의 남성으로 구성된 록밴드가 세계적으로 소외되고 있는 록이란 음악 장르를 어떻게 부흥시킬 수 있을지 도모하는 시험장이었다. 이 콘서트는 2010년 데뷔 이후 3년 만에 가진 첫 월드투어의 일환으로, 지난 4월 6일 대만에 이어 홍콩에서 열린 4번째 무대다.

멤버 4명을 소개하는 시작부터 멋스러움이 강하게 투영됐다. ‘블루문’이 열리는 중앙 무대 속 꽃미남 4명의 소개 영상은 만화 속 주인공처럼 그려졌다. 정용화(보컬 겸 기타), 이종현(기타), 이정신(베이스), 강민혁(드럼) 등 얼굴만으로도 먹고 들어가는 ‘이미지 끝판왕’ 4인의 기타 한 줄, 드럼 한 비트 내려치는 모습이 영화처럼 그려지자, 관객은 이미 그 카리스마에 지배당하고 있었다.

멤버들은 첫 곡 ‘웨어 유 아(Where You Are)’부터 휘몰아쳤다. 구수하게 넘어가는 ‘뽕끼’ 선율을 무기로, 하드록과 펑키, 댄스 리듬을 자유자재로 뒤섞어 하이브리드 록의 최신 유행을 가감없이 선보였다. 때론 팝인지, 때론 록인지 구분하기 어려운 독특한 느낌의 음악들이 시종 이어졌는데, 그 신나는 리듬은 2시간 30분의 스탠딩 공연을 가능케 한 원동력이기도 했다.

베이스가 랩을 하고, 퍼스트 기타가 보컬을 나눠 부르고, 드럼이 코러스를 맡는 구성은 일반 록 밴드에겐 이색적이었다. 자칫 지루해질 수 있는 무대에 활기를 주려는 그들만의 차별화된 전략 같았다고 할까. 하지만 보컬 마이크가 다분화되고, 노래와 연주의 겹침이 이어지면서 밴드의 정체성과 음악에 대한 집중력이 다소 약화되는 약점이 드러나기도 했다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 전체적인 퍼포먼스와 표현력은 훌륭했다. 특히 정용화는 밴드 프런트맨의 기능과 역할에 대해 제대로 인식하고 있었다. 그는 때론 록그룹 마룬5의 애덤 러빈이나 콜드플레이의 크리스 마틴의 이미지를 차용하며 세련미를 극대화했고, 때론 슬픈 눈빛으로 보는 이의 심장을 덜컥거리게 하는 묘한 매력을 발산했다. 땀에 젖은 머리카락이 한 번쯤 좌에서 우로 쏠릴 땐, 할리우드 여배우가 왜 그토록 록 스타를 사랑하는지에 대한 이유가 명백히 제시되는 듯했다.

‘아임 쏘리’ ‘헤이 유’ ‘러브’ 등 그들의 히트곡이 줄지어 쏟아지는 하이라이트 장면에서 관객들은 밴드 사운드보다 더 큰 함성을 쏟아내며 한국말로 끝까지 노래를 따라부르기도 했다. 이날 공연에서 만난 진(Jinn·26)은 “씨엔블루는 공연에서 라이브 연주를 하기 때문에 댄스 위주의 케이팝(K-POP) 가수들과 다른 매력이 있다”며 “매 공연마다 새로운 느낌이 있어 같은 제목으로 열리는 공연도 자주 찾는다”고 말했다.

멤버들은 앞서 가진 기자회견에서 “공연을 처음 할 땐 이미지만을 생각해 멋있게 보이는 데 주안점을 뒀는데, 공연을 많이 할수록 관객과 일체감을 이루는 공연이 중요하다는 걸 깨닫고 있다”며 “나이들수록 멋있는 밴드의 모습이 나올 수 있도록 계속 노력하겠다”고 강조했다.

이번 월드투어는 상반기 호주, 필리핀, 중국, 말레이시아에 이어 하반기 미국, 캐나다 등 미주 투어가 예정돼 있다. 씨엔블루는 “월드투어를 통해 빌보드 진출에 대한 초창기 꿈이 현실로 다가가고 있는 것 같아 기쁘다”며 “우리 나이가 35세쯤 되면 빌보드 1, 2위를 다투며 타임스퀘어에서 기자회견을 할 수 있지 않을까 조심스럽게 기대하고 있다”고 농담 반 진담 반으로 얘기했다.

It was an eccentric performance. They weren't quite as heavy as the traditional rock bands, but it wasn't easy to write them off as a meager idol band, either. They guided the 7,000 audience members into a fantasy world by mixing and matching all ingredients that a band can have in their disposal.

On the 11th, idol band CNBLUE's first world tour "Blue Moon" was held at Asia World Expo Arena in Hong Kong.  It was a testing ground of how a handsome quartet rock band could revive the genre of rock, now increasingly marginalized throughout the world. Part of their first world tour achieved in three years of debut, this is their 4th show since the performance in Taiwan on April 6.

From the start, the four were introduced in dashing light. In the introduction video shown across the main "Blue Moon" stage, the four flower boys were portrayed almost as beautiful as manga characters.  As the "visual killers" Jung Yonghwa (Vo. & guitar), Lee Jonghyun (Guitar), Lee Jungshin (Bass), and Kang Minhyuk (Drums) were shown strumming their guitars and beating the drum like movie stars, their charisma captivated the audience at once.

Beginning with their first track, "Where you are", the members stormed the stage. Freely mixing trot-esque melodies with hard rock, funky, and dance rhythms, they presented the trendiest version of hybrid rock without hesitation. Playing throughout the show was a unique sound that was difficult to separate whether it was pop or rock: an exciting style of rhythm that kept the energy alive for the 2.5-hour standing concert.

The arrangement where the bassist raps, the first guitarist shares the vocals, and the drummer sings the chorus was different from typical rock bands. It seemed like their own strategy to energize the stage that could get dull.  But when the vocal mics were divided and the vocals and instruments continued to overlap, it slightly undermined their identity as a band and concentration on music, revealing weakness.

Nonetheless, the overall performance and the skills were excellent. Especially, Jung Yonghwa was perfectly aware of the function and the role of a frontman. He sometimes borrowed from the images of Adam Levine from Maroon 5 or Chris Martin from Coldplay, maximizing his trendy vibe. Sometimes, he would give off surreal charms with his gloomy gazes that almost caused a heart attack. When his sweaty hair flipped from left to right, it was clear to see why Hollywood actresses are so in love with rock stars.

During the climax when their hit songs like "I'm sorry", "Hey you", and "Love" was played after another, the audience screamed louder than the band's sound and sang them in their entirety in Korean. One that I met there, Jinn said, "Because CNBLUE play their instruments live at concerts, they have a different appeal from dance-based Kpop singers. Every performance has a new feel to it, so even if they are titled the same, I attend their concerts multiple times."
