언제나 正道(정도)를 걷는 듯 보이는 그에게 자유로운지 물었다.
"내가 분명하게 그어놓은 선 안에서 자유롭다"는 대답이 돌아왔다. '미래의 선택' 박세주는 반전의 인물이다. 정용화에게도 스스로 정해놓은 경계를 넘어설 반전의 날이 올까. 언젠가 그 선을 넘고는 또 별일 아니라는 듯 덤덤하게 웃어보일 그가 그려졌다. Editor 조하나

드라마 촬영장에서 바로 오느라 피곤하겠다.
괜찮다. 드라마는 할 때마다 재밌다.

드라마 '미래의 선택'을 시작하면서 나름 기대가 있었겠다. 캐릭터에도, 자신에게도.
실제 내 나이보다 많은 역할은 처음이라는 점이 좋았다. '미래의 선택'이 거의 2년만에 맡은 작품인데 전작들을 보니 내가 나이가 많이 들었구나, 싶었다.

나이가 많이 들었다고? 뭘 보고?
화면 보고. (웃음) 늙었다는 건 아닌데, '미남이시네요' 할땐 완전 애기였더라. 전작들에선 (박)신혜랑 호흡을 맞췄는데, 이번 작품에서는 선배님들과 함께해서 새롭게 배울게 많다. 스케줄로 몸이 피곤하긴 해도 촬영은 재밌게 하고 있다.

박세주를 맡으면서 준비하면 좋겠다, 싶은게 있었나?
구체적으로 연기에 앞서 어떻게 해야지, 하는 생각은 일부러 안 하고 시작했다. 전작들은 연기 수업도 받고 하면서 내가 극중 캐릭터로 변하려고 노력했는데, 이번엔 박세주를 원래 정용화인것처럼 편하게 하자, 내 느낌대로 가자, 했다. 그러니까 연기하기가 훨씬 편해지더라.

본인이 믿고 있는 부분에 확신이 있고?
그렇다. 지금 내가 생각하는 게 맞다고 생각하며 가는 중이다.

드라마를 둘러싼 수치라는게 있다. 시청률을 말하는 거다. 그런 걸 떠나 배우 정용화로서 스스로 느끼는 만족도가 높은 것 같다.
맞다. 나는 이 작품과 역할을 맡은 것에 전혀 후회가 없다.

감정을 모두 꺼내놓는 게 아니라 조금 눌러서 표현한다는 느낌이 들더라.
그렇게 봐주시면 감사하다. 예전에 연기한 걸 보면 내가 봐도 민망한 부분이 있다. 내가 아니라는 느낌이 너무 강하게 드니까. 지금은 순간순간 내 원래의 표정도 나오는 것 같아서 좀더 현실감 있어보이고 좋다.

지금까지 자상한 캐릭터를 주로 맡았다. 박세주도 그렇더라. 현실에선 찾아보기 힘든...(웃음)
그치, 있을 수가 없지.

개인적으론 미래가 박세주를 선택했으면 좋겠다.
나도! 정말 나랑 됐으면 좋겠다!

드라마의 상황이 실제라면 본인에게 더 승산이 있다고 생각하나?
당연하지. 지금 박세주가 답답해 죽겠다.

더 적극적으로 하지 않아서?
이렇게까지 좋아하는데...아, 또 사투리 나온다.

괜찮다. 사투리 써도 된다. 이건 영상 인터뷰가 아니다.
아, 그렇네. 이렇게까지 하는데 너무한 거 아이가~.

지금 너무 욱했다.(웃음)
은혜 누나한테 현장에서 가끔 그런다. 나 좀 봐주라고. 그럼 누나가 그런다. 내가 안 보고 싶어서 안 보냐고. 대본에 그렇게 나와 있다고. (웃음)

드라마 촬영 환경에 대한 각오는 하고 시작했을 테고, 현장에서 역할에 몰입하는데 쏟는 에너지가 상당할 텐데.
체력적으로 힘든 건 문제가 안 된다. 다만, 대사가 길 때...(웃음)

현장에서 필요한 순발력은 무대에서 이미 단련되었겠다. 드라마 촬영하는 동시에 일본 투어도 진행 중이다. 그게 가능하다는 게 신기하다.
엇! 우리가 하는 투어도 '아레나'인데. (웃음)
사실 어떤 공연이든 끝난 후에 뻗는 건 똑같다. 그런데 촬영장에서의 에너지와 공연 무대에서의 에너지가 좀 다른 것 같다. 무대에 설 땐 오히려 관객에게 기를 받는다.

벌써 데뷔 5년 차를 바라보고 있다. 음악과 연기, 주위를 아우르는 시스템을 어느 정도 컨트롤하고 있나?
드라마 촬영하다 일본으로 건너가 2회 공연하고 다시 촬영장으로 돌아오고...공연을 해야 하니까 목 관리도 해야 하고, 몸 관리도 해야 하고. 그런데 신기하게도 그걸 대부분 해냈을 때의 성취감이 상당하다. 그러면서 더 책임감을 갖게 되고, 더 많은 걸 배운다.

무대에 오를 때마다 한결같을 순 없을 거다. 슬럼프에 빠질 때도 있을 테고.
물론 그렇다. 팀으로 서는 무대에서 나 혼자 최선을 다한다고 잘되는 게 아니니까. 예전에 공연만 할 땐 오히려 부담이 심했다. 무대에 오르기 전엔 항상 시험 치르는 기분이었고, 잘해야 한다는 주문을 셀 수 없이 외웠다. 그러다 작은 실수라도 하나 하면, 혼자 꿍해 있을 때도 있었고, 요즘은 무대에 대한 부담감보단 '즐기자'는 주의로 바뀌었다. 바쁜 와중에 무대에 설 때 오히려 더 재밌게, 즐기면서 하게 되는 것 같다. 그러니까 관객도 더 즐기는 것 같더라. 무대 자체를 즐기는 여유가 좀 생겼다.

로커의 라이프스타일과는 거리가 좀 있어 보인다. 오늘 보니 밝으면서도 정적이고 차분한데.
거침없는 로커들을 보며 대리만족을 할 때도 물론 있지만 나람 사람 자체가 그런 성격이 아니라서 굳이 그렇게까지 하고 싶진 않다. 나 자신이 그렇지 않은데 그런 음악을 하는 건 거짓말이 되는 거니까. 록이라는 장르 안에서 내 식대로 하는 거다. 나는 그저 음악에 나를 담고 싶다.

보는 눈이 많아질수록 억측이나 오해도 많아진다. 그런 것에 대해서 신경을 많이 쓰는 편인가?
무언가에 신경 쓰는 성격은 아니다. 내가 선택한 부분에 후회도 잘 안 하는 편이고. 단, 내 기준에서 엇나가는 걸 스스로 용납하질 못한다. 정해놓은 선 안에서 넘어서려 하면 본능적으로 제어하게 된다. 내가 엇나간 상황을 머릿속으로 미리 상상을 하는거지. 그럼 너무 고통스럽다. 한번쯤은 그걸 넘어서야 하는데, 잘 안 된다.

나중에 후회하지 않을까?
후회하겠지. 그래도 지금 아니면 못할 일들이 많다. 열심히 해야지.

지금 이렇게 열심히 하는 근본적인 목적은 뭘까?
나는 돈이 많다고 행복한 사람도 아닌 것 같고...꾸준히 일하는 게 목표다. 한 단계, 한 단계 올라간다는 성취감과 쾌감을 느끼는 게 좋다.

25세 또래의 '보통 삶'에 대한 동경은 없나?
부러움도 있지. 그런데 뒤집어 생각해보면 나 또한 친구들이 부러워하는 삶을 살고 있는 거다. 수만 명 앞에서 공연할 수 있는 자리인데, 당연히 감수해야지. 내가 무언가를 가졌다면 다른 하나는 포기할 줄 알아야 한다. 그걸 못 참으면 아무것도 못한다.

25세 청년에게서 나오기 힘든 이야기다.
나 늙었나? (웃음)

애늙은이 같다.


Jung Yonghwa's Twist
As he always seems to stay on track, I asked if he's free.
He answered, "I'm free within the definite boundaries I've drawn."
Park Seju in 'MHIYD' is a character with a twist. Will there be a day when Jung Yonghwa also crosses the border he's set for himself? Even if he did cross the line one day, he'd probably smile as if nothing's happened.

You must be tired from coming straight from the drama set.
That's okay. I enjoy filming dramas every time.

You must have high expectations for 'MHIYD'. For your character, and for yourself as well.
I liked that it's my first time playing a character older than myself. 'MHIYD' is a first drama in almost two years, so when I watched my previous works, I thought, "I'm quite aged now."

You're quite aged? What did you see?
I saw the screen (laughs). Not that I'm old, but I was such a baby during "You're Beautiful". Before, I acted with (Park) Shinhye, but in this one I'm working with sunbaenims so there's so much new to learn. Though I'm tired from the schedule, I'm very much enjoying the shooting.

Was there something you thought of preparing before playing Park Seju?
I purposely started without thinking specifically how to do something before acting. In the previous works, I took acting lessons and tried to transform into the characters, but this time, I tried being relaxed, as if Park Seju is originally Jung Yonghwa, let's go with the way I feel. This made it a lot easier to act.

Are you certain about what you believe?
Yes. I'm going at it thinking, what I'm picturing is correct.

There are these numbers regarding dramas. I'm talking about the ratings. But beyond such things, it seems like you're highly satisfied as Actor Jung Yonghwa.
Correct. I have absolutely no regret on taking this role and the drama.

It felt as if you don't bring out all the emotions, but express them by suppressing them a little.
I'm grateful that you take it that way. When I watch my previous acting, there are parts where I cringe myself because it feels so obvious that it's not me. Now, it seems like my own facial expressions peep out from time to time, so it looks more realistic and nice.

You've mostly played gentle roles. So was Park Seju. These people who are so hard to find in reality...(laughs)
Right. There's no way such people exist.

Personally, I wish Mirae would choose Park Seju.
Me too! I really wish she ends up with me!

If the situation in the drama is actually in real life, do you think you have a better chance?
Of course. I'm so frustrated with Park Seju right now.

Because he's not more proactive?
He likes her so much...oh, my dialect's coming out again.

That's okay. You can use your dialect, this isn't a video interview.
Oh, that's right. He's doing this much for her, ain't it too harsh~? (Busan dialect)

Easy on your temper there (laughs)
Sometimes I tell Eunhye nuna on the set, "Please take notice of me." Then nuna says, "Do you think I don't want to? This is what the script says." (laughs)

You must have started knowing the conditions of the drama set. It must be staggering, the energy you must invest into getting immersed into your character.
Physical fatigue is not a problem at all. But, when I have long lines...(laughs)

Performing on the stage must have trained you with the kind of quick adaptability necessary on the set. You're concurrently filming the drama and carrying out the Japan tour at the same time. It's amazing that it's possible.
Oh! The tour we're doing is also "Arena" (laughs). Actually, it's just the same that I pass out after every concert. But I feel like the energy on set and the energy on stage are a little different. On stage, I actually receive energy from the audience.

It'll soon be your fifth year since debut. How are you controlling the system around you, your music and acting?
In the middle of filming, I'd fly to Japan and perform two concerts and return to the drama...because I need to perform, I need to take care of my throat and take care of my body. Interestingly, the feeling of accomplishment is very rewarding after successfully completing most of it. I become more responsible, and learn even more things.

But you can't be the same every time you go on stage. Sometimes you may be in a slump.
Certainly. On a stage that we stand as a team, it's not always successful just because I try my best. Before, when I only performed concerts, I felt much more pressured. Before going onstage, it always felt like I'm entering an exam. I countlessly murmured a spell to myself, that I need to do well. Sometimes if I make one small mistake, I'd be depressed by myself. Nowadays, I've changed from feeling pressured about the stage to just "having fun". It seems like when I'm performing in the middle of busy schedules, I have more fun. The audience also seem to enjoy it more. Now I've grown a room to enjoy the stage itself.

Your lifestyle seems a little distant from that of a rocker. Meeting you today in person, while bright, you're also quiet and collected.
There are times when I certainly feel vicarious satisfaction from fearless rockers, but that's not my personality so I don't feel like I need to do the same. If that's not who I am, it'd be hypocrisy to make music like that. Within the genre of rock, I'm working with my own style. I simply want to fill music with myself.

The more eyes are on you, the more speculation and misunderstandings you get. Do you pay attention to those things?
I'm not the kind who pays attention to such things. I usually don't regret the choices I made. But, I cannot approve of myself crossing my own standards. If I'm about to cross the line I set, I tend to limit myself instinctively. I go ahead and imagine myself in a situation where I go astray. It makes me feel so painful. I know I need to cross it at least once, but it's not easy.

Won't you regret it later?
I probably would. But there are many things that I won't be able to do if it's not now. I need to work hard.

What's the fundamental goal of the reason you're working so hard right now?
I don't think I'm a kind who's happy because I'm rich...My goal is to work steadily. I like the feeling of satisfaction and pleasure from going up one level at a time.

Do you ever envy the "normal lives" of other 25-year-olds?
I do feel envious. But on the flip side, I'm also living the life that my friends envy. I'm in a position that can perform in front of tens of thousands of crowd, of course I need to bear with it. If I have something, I must give up another. If you can't endure it, you can't do anything.

It's not something easily heard from a 25-year-old.
Am I old? (laughs)
